The LMT is a metadata standard that provides language codes, endonyms, and display values vetted by language experts. Meg Morrissey, Co-Chair of the LMT, will give an overview of the standard and how it is governed.

Meg Morrissey is a librarian, taxonomist, and Co-Chair of the Language Metadata Table, a standard for language codes used across media and entertainment. She spent the last decade polishing metadata and establishing data governance and DAM best practice for companies large and small, including the Walt Disney Studios, Netflix, and KraftHeinz.

Taxonomy Talk is a Discord community that is open to anyone working within information architecture and knowledge organization spaces, no matter their level of experience or knowledge. This includes people who work on, manage, or are responsible for taxonomies

aspiring practitioners to join to network with, communicate with, and learn from current practitioners.

Hello! It's been a few months since we last had an in-person meetup. So let's see if we can get this going again. 

This month, we're meeting at the Golden Deli in San Gabriel. It's known as the best place to get pho in the San Gabriel Valley (source unknown, verified by yours truly).

Let's talk about what's going on in your world of UX (work, projects, bootcamp, etc) over a big bowl of Vietnamese beef rice noodles. 

Tickets cover the estimated cost of food and tips ($20). Any remains will be donated to DIA Design Guild for planning and hosting.

Join TaxoBob for a lively discussion about the trouble with topic taxonomies in this month's Taxonomy Talk. As always, Taxonomy Talk invites attendees of all levels to join the conversation. Whether you're a seasoned veteran in the field or a beginner looking to learn more, you'll find this event informative and engaging. 

One primary tension in taxonomy construction is between best practices (as defined by various taxonomy standards) and practical (business) requirements.

That is: the tension is between categorization according to 

How can we balance or reconcile these priorities? Can we model our way out of them? And what are the options?

This issue is paramount in Topic taxonomies; Topic or Subject taxonomies are very common and present specific modeling challenges.

People are used to navigating topic-oriented structures. It is common sense to put things where people will find them; however, that does not mean that it’s also Good Taxonomy Practice.

In this talk, I’ll address the difference between Concepts and Topics, outline some of the challenges in building these types of taxonomies, and offer a number of practical solutions for addressing them.

As taxonomist and ontologist with an interest in knowledge graphs and Linked Data, he has worked for over a decade building and implementing taxonomy projects for publishing, enterprise, technology, and e-commerce clients. He brings experience with information modeling and semantic software to client-focused metadata and vocabulary projects.

A frequent writer and presenter on semantic topics in conferences and journals, Bob’s current research interests include ontologies, knowledge graphs, and text classification. Still active teaching and playing music, Bob has been a member of the local ensemble Gamelan Encantada for the past several years. He lives in Albuquerque with his wife.

Taxonomy Talk with TaxoBob: Topic Taxonomies are the Worst

With summer approaching, we are planning to meet outdoors and enjoy the weather. Most importantly, we are going to have some fun! 

Pasadena Outdoor Escape Game: Explosive Escape is on our radar for the month of May. Yes, you heard it. It is an outdoor escape game in Pasadena. Unlike regular escape room games, this one provides routes, clues, challenges, and stories in exploring the past and the present of Pasadena.  The goal of this game is to stop a nuclear apocalypse through the eyes of the greatest minds of the 1930s.

You have the option of either buying the game ticket yourself or letting SGVUX do it for you.

By purchasing your ticket through SGVUX, you're not only saving yourself the time and trouble but also helping a volunteer group fund future events.

The month of March brings us a number of great conferences that we're attending. From World IA Day Los Angeles, to CSUN's assistive tech conference (March 14-17), to IAC23 (March 28-April 1, New Orleans), there are plenty of topics to inspire us and share what we've learned.

Previously known as the SGVUX Happy Hour, we are now resetting this as the monthly community hangout for the DIA community. Hosted on Google Meet.

Anyone new or already affiliated with DIA is welcome to join us for lunch and boba afterwards. You'll get the opportunity to network and to know the wonderful people who make up our agency and program.

It's been a really long time since the local UX community in the Los Angeles area has met up in person. And frankly, we don't really know how comfortable people will be to meet in person. Guess we'll find out!

The San Gabriel Valley User Experience Meetup is hosting our first in-person UX meetup since March 2020 over dim sum! 

Being that it's dim sum, we're meeting Saturday morning as early as the restaurant opens. Expect a small wait. 

Please RSVP so that Grace has an accurate headcount. 

If you've never had dimsum before, don't fret! We'll cover the first-timer's experience of dim sum, from noisy Chinese restaurants, waiting in lines, chasing after waiters (Sea Harbour doesn't do carts). 

If you have allergies, you are warned. Dimsum is not friendly for people with gluten, nut, soy, and shrimp allergies. 

If we are seated before you arrive, we'll voluntell someone to stand by the door to direct you to our table(s). 

If you arrive early and no one's been seated yet, look for Grace, Justin, or Kao. We'll have expectant and friendly expressions as we search the faces of people waiting outside for familiar faces. If we've never met before or wouldn't be able to recognize us behind face masks, we may hold SGVUX signs. 

Payment is expected when you arrive. No refunds. Any proceeds will benefit DIA Design Guild and supports the overhead expenses of maintaining the pro-bono apprentice program and our monthly events. 

Let's talk dimsum and UX: A casual catch up in the SGV

As a UX practitioner, Grace Lau has been doing information architecture, user research, and design for the past 14 years. Over the years, she's developed a certain style on how she runs user interview sessions. Whether she has the skills to masquerade as a user researcher is, well, another matter...

Join us this June's UX meetup, observe and critique Grace as she conducts a generative research interview. She'll be interviewing Debbie Lau, a nurse who happens to be her sister, on information challenges a nurse faces during COVID.

As a safe space for learning, we'll be learning about how to give feedback on a user research critique and offer actionable advice to help you hone your craft.

No matter what stage your project is in, work or passion, we're a "community of strangers and friends" to give critique, evaluate, discuss and give feedback to help you on your project. These discussions will help presenters talk through, learn, and iterate on whatever they're working on.
