About Event

Sea level rise is a real and growing threat to Bay Area communities. None are projected to be affected as much as San Rafael, particularly in the Canal District and downtown areas, in the next two decades. The Canal District ranks in the 99th percentile nationwide in terms of flood risk according to FEMA.

The City of San Rafael is collaborating with the County of Marin and two important community organizations, the Canal Alliance and Multicultural Center of Marin, to build shared capacity to understand the options available and the resources needed to address this existential threat.

Join Sustainable San Rafael, the City of San Rafael and staff from the Collaborative to hear about the project, insights into San Rafael’s vulnerabilities, draft alternatives for long-term protection including nature-based opportunities, and near-term community priorities for action.

The event kicks off with a discussion with Sara Aminzadeh, Deputy Director of External Affairs for the California Natural Resources Agency on California’s groundbreaking Climate Bond. In addition, Sustainable San Rafael’s Student Advisory Committee will give a brief presentation on their sea level rise project. This is an event not to be missed!

Sara Aminzadeh and Student Advisory Committee 5-5:40pm. Sea level rise presentation and discussion 5:30-7pm. In-person, downtown San Rafael. There will be a listen-only online option.
