Discussion
Transparency is now a well-established component of platform regulation. Both legislative and voluntary transparency frameworks are proliferating internationally with an exponentially increasing volume of transparency materials in more and more areas, including risk assessments, algorithmic auditing, data sharing, and transparency reporting.
But meaningful transparency is not a “set and forget” exercise. Policy-makers and industry need an ongoing systematic approach to meaningful transparency that is carefully designed, proactively administered, and periodically reviewed. Transparency is the centrepiece of a regulatory strategy for technology companies (and government interactions with them) that will be with us for decades to come.
What conceptual frameworks, resources, and networks are needed to effectively implement these emerging transparency regulations? How can industry, civil society, and regulators engage to ensure transparency implementation is meaningful and rights-respecting?
Join us for a presentation and event drawing on work by the Action Coalition on Meaningful Transparency and the Integrity Institute. For more context, see this piece on Tech Policy Press.
Launch event
Participants will outline, and call for, a long-term approach to transparency across international borders, incorporating a range of audience requirements, and an increasingly diverse technology sector in a broadening range of regional areas.
The session will highlight two key outputs:
“Shining a Light on Transparency Practices” – a high level overview from the Integrity Institute for policy makers and industry leaders giving a sense of the dimensions and coverage of different kinds of transparency mechanisms, as well as their purpose and utility to different audiences. Presented by Hilary Ross, Integrity Institute transparency working group lead and GNI special projects advisor.
The “Transparency Initiatives Portal”, a website from the Action Coalition on Meaningful Transparency that provides community infrastructure for sharing and tracking transparency initiatives, outputs shared by governments, companies and civil society, and events like consultation deadlines and discussion sessions. Presented by Tom Barraclough, Director of the Brainbox Institute.
We hope you can join us!
