Bio: Joel is the founder of Move37 Labs, an AI consulting company specializing in techbio strategy and execution. Move37 Labs has engagements with companies ranging from RNA therapeutics, to analyzing environmental, to AI agents for bioinformatics pipelines, to detecting heart abnormalities during pregnancies. Prior to that, Joel was the VP and Head of Machine Learning at Deep Genomics, a Toronto-based RNA therapeutics company. Joel started and led AI research teams at Google and Alphabet for 10 years, including AI for gastroenterology in Boston, AI for social good in Japan, and an audio biomarkers team in the Middle East. Joel is the creator of TensorFlow-GAN, and has authored numerous papers and public AI courses. He received a degree in Mathematics, and a term prize in Physics, from Princeton University.
Abstract: RNA therapeutics have revolutionized medicine, from COVID vaccines to rare disease treatments. But rational design of RNA sequences, for instance that can effectively deliver drugs to specific cells, remains a grand challenge in biotechnology - one that represents both a massive market opportunity and an important scientific puzzle. Designing even a small therapeutic RNA sequence means searching through more possibilities than there are atoms in the universe, and traditional lab methods, where scientists iteratively design, synthesize, and test molecules, are too slow to effectively explore this vast space. In this talk, we'll discuss how.
