Saturn Return by Jared Freschman

​Gotham Bowery is pleased to present Saturn Return, the debut solo exhibition of Jared Freschman on June 12th.

Jared Freschman’s fluid compositions conjure the hidden spiritual practices and lives of today’s queer youth. Ombré fades and jewel-tone color palettes open a door to nostalgic, dream-like memories. Freschman illustrates allegories that combine vivid flashbacks, mysticism, and hyperfeminine archetypes that own the composition. He builds a liminal space where control lies in the hands of queer individuals. Perspectives shift from first to third person, and the artist’s lived experiences mingle with those of a broader queer collective.

This exhibition showcases colored pencil drawings and acrylic paintings created by Jared Freschman over the last 5 years. Freschman is known for his striking color palette, which references the chakras within the human body. Auras and energetic vibrations span the works of this collection. Along side of Freschman’s occult practices, he references his Jewish heritage. He includes symbols, such as Star of David necklaces, that he received from his grandfather who was a Holocasut Survivor and hebrew prayers from his grandmother’s funeral within some of these works.

Saturn Return references the astrological transit that people face in their late 20s and early 30s. In astrology, saturn represents karma, structure, limitations, and perseverance. When saturn returns to the place to where it was when someone was born, individuals face karmic lessons, significant life changes, and increased responsibility.

Jared Freschman (b.1996) was raised in Hockessin, Delaware. He received his BFA from Pratt Insititute and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been exhibited and acknowledged globally. Freschman has shown his work throughout New York, London, Barcelona, Vermont, Tel Aviv and more. Outside of his art practice, Freschman has played an active role as a Budtender at Gotham’s Williamsburg location in the Domino Sugar Factory.
