Matchmaking Corner 联合广场相亲角: Meet your future partner at Union Square
June 27 (Friday) 7- 9 pm
$20 per pair
🌈 All genders & sexualities welcome | 🗣 English-friendly
Inspired by the legendary matchmaking corner at People’s Square in Shanghai—where thousands of anxious parents sit day and night, rain or shine, advertising their children’s profiles on handwritten posters—we’re bringing that same mix of chaos, charm, and over-the-top matchmaking energy to New York City. But with one key twist: your friends will play the role of your “parents.”
Just like in China, where parents post up in parks with info on their kids’ height, salary, property ownership, or flattering photos, your friends will craft your dating profile from their point of view, hyping you up, and trying to match you with someone they think fits. They’ll be the ones negotiating your dating prospects like a seasoned auntie on a mission.
But don’t get too comfortable.
After the first round of friend-orchestrated pairings, a series of chaotic mini-games will shake up the matches. Your friend might even jump into the matchmaking battlefield themselves if someone catches their eye. Sparks will fly. Rivalries may erupt. And just like marriage, the best match might not be your first crush—but the one who can help you win.
📝 How to Register: Sign up in pairs—you and a friend. One of you will be the “child” (the one getting matched), and the other plays the “parent.”
● Register under one name—each duo counts as one entry.
● $20 total per pair (covers both participants)
● All genders and sexualities are warmly welcomed.
● The event will be conducted in English, but creative bilingualism on your posters is welcome!
📦 What to Prepare:
● One A4-size poster about your friend (the “child”), written or drawn from the “parent’s” perspective. Think of it as a personalized dating ad: include whatever you think is essential—fun facts, personality traits, relationship goals, astrological signs, or even dramatic flair.
● Dress code: Cross-dressing and character cosplay are highly encouraged. Female friends can dress like stern dads. Guy friends can go full tiger mom. The more dramatic, the better. Wigs, fake mustaches, props, or even a full “family photo” to help sell your case.
🎯 What to Expect:
● Opening poster fair where “parents” introduce their “children.”
● Matchmaking chaos: friends setting friends up.
● A series of games that challenge compatibility and chemistry, and shuffle matches throughout the night.
● A panel of three judges will score final pairings based on:
○ ✨ Astrological compatibility, sparked by Azhel.
○ 🔮 Chinese BaZi (birth chart), decoded by Jasphy Zheng.
○ 💫 On-the-spot chemistry and teamwork, unraveled by Caiwei Chen.
