

The One About Societal AI
We'll be having Dr. Xing Xie (Partner Research Manager, Microsoft Research Asia) to share insights from Microsoft Research Asia’s work on Societal AI, a multidisciplinary research agenda focused on aligning AI technologies with societal needs and values. Dr. Xie will highlight ten key research questions that address the ethical, technical, and social challenges posed by advanced AI systems, including safety, fairness, value alignment, and regulation. Drawing on collaborations across computer science, psychology, law, and philosophy, the session will offer a research-driven perspective on building AI systems that are not only capable but also trustworthy and beneficial to society. More About the Speaker
Dr. Xing Xie is a Partner Research Manager at Microsoft Research Asia, where he has worked since 2001 after receiving his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology of China. His research spans data mining, social computing, and responsible AI. He is a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and China Computer Federation, and has received multiple Test-of-Time and Impact Awards from ACM SIGKDD, SIGSPATIAL, and IEEE MDM. Dr. Xie has delivered keynotes at conferences like MDM, ASONAM, and W2GIS, and served as program co-chair for events including ACM Ubicomp, SIGSPATIAL, IEEE MDM, and PAKDD.
