About Event

ProgramEarth and the Heron’s Nest invite you and your ERG to come restore and connect with the land around the Duwamish Longhouse. Learn about the history of the Heron’s Nest and Land Back initiative, visit an ancestral site on the Duwamish Land, and engage in land stewardship activities.

  • Learn: Gain insights into the Duwamish’s perspective on the Duwamish River and Valley through a nature tour. We might spot river otters, beavers, ospreys, bald eagles, and herons (and their babies!).

  • Engage: Meet people who care about environmental conservation.

  • Experience: Visit the Duwamish Longhouse, a traditional cedar post-and-beam structure designed in the Puget Salish Longhouse style. Learn about its use for tribal, cultural, and educational gatherings.

When: Friday, July 18th, 2025 from 12-3 pm PT

Where: The Heron’s Nest Outdoors at 4818 15th Ave SW, Seattle, WA

Transportation: Drive yourself or coordinate carpool with us at team@programearth.org

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, closed-toed shoes, water bottle

What we provide: Gloves and tools, but feel free to bring your own

What does this fundraiser go towards?: When you donate via your ticket or Benevity, all proceeds go towards supporting volunteers at the Heron’s Nest Landback Project for the Duwamish Tribe.

Cultural Context:

The Duwamish people have been in the Seattle/Greater King County area since time immemorial. Stories, such as "North Wind, South Wind," tell of the last Ice Age, and an Ice Weir breaking over the Duwamish River.

They were the first signatories to the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855, signed by Chief Si'ahl, the chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.

The longhouse today stands across the street from where one of the largest villages was located before it was burned down in 1895.
