About Event

The Department of Philosophy and World Religions is pleased to announce the next event in  our Theorizing at Rowan lecture series for Fall 2022.

On Wednesday October 19, at 5 pm.  Professor Matthew Lund (Philosophy, Rowan University), will present a talk entitled “Precious Memories: Persisting Institutional Bias in the History of the Royal Observatory.”  The event will be held in a hybrid format, in person in Business Hall 103 and online via Zoom.

Prof Lund has provided the following abstract for his presentation: “This paper details how historians of the Royal Observatory persist in rosy characterizations of Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne, despite the fact that the resurfaced letters of David Kinnebrook show that Maskelyne not only ignored evidence for observational relativity when it was presented to him but even presented the observations of his fired assistant (Kinnebrook) as his own. Bosses behaving badly are nothing new – not calling out such behavior over 200 years after the fact – that’s something else.”

This event is co-sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Upcoming Talks (all events at 5 pm in Business 103)

November 2, Chris Jingchao Ma (Philosophy, Villanova), “The Habit of Sensing: The Social Context of Gendered Bodily Sensations”

November 16, Walter Gershon (Critical Foundations of Education, Rowan), Educational Sound Studies: Scales and Modes, Neoliberalism as Eugenics, and Critical Possibilities for the Sonic.”
