Workshop Description

With more ways of accessing poetry than ever, and ever more people writing it, it can be overwhelming to know where you fit in, and tempting to write back into poetic expectations, tropes and stylistic habits of the work you see around you. This course is focused on discovering and then trusting what makes your work unique, by empowering your unique imagination, drawing on your own associations and experiences, and making use of the connections that only your brain can make. It is suitable for anyone who wants to write more originally and distinctly, whether you are just beginning to discover how your own poems might sound, or you are a more experienced poet looking for a more singular voice, or to test and extend your reach creatively.

Exercises, discussions and close-reading sessions will grow your knowledge of poetry, and allow you to practice and experiment different techniques in your own way; you will be encouraged to “write towards yourself” and prioritise what is unique in your writing, so that it stands out and intrigues; and you will be encouraged to invite the Reader into your poems, as places that they can inhabit and be imaginative participants in. The weekly workshop element of the course will allow you to share your work with your classmates, and gauge your work more objectively in an encouraging and rigorous environment. Each student will also have a one-to-one tutorial session to discuss your work with your tutor.
