Can virtual sex during a pandemic replace activity with physical touch?
Three months after the lockdown was implemented in Britain, Emma, a 26-year-old student, walked into a virtual party on the Zoom app.
There he joined people whom he had only met virtually.

The party at Zoom that Emma had joined had started with a game of sipping. The event was not what Emma was used to.
"We played the series 'Never Have I Ever' and the organizers asked questions like, 'Which celebrity do you most want to see at the Killing Kittens party?'," Said Emma.
The question prompted party attendees to talk about their sexual fantasies and preferences. It makes for a smooth transition to a less stringent evening out. Emma said some party attendees then started to take off their clothes.
"It was a very good and quite sexy interaction with other people."
This was the kind of relationship that Emma had always wanted. When her housemate lived with her family and lost her job in March last year, Emma spent most of the pandemic without physical contact with other people.

"There are times when the situation triggers feelings of extreme loneliness," says Emma
Even though she had previously attended a sex party, it wasn't until November 2019 that Emma joined Killing Kittens.
"I was a little nervous about getting involved," he said. When a pandemic strikes, Emma worries that she will miss the activity.
Emma then joined one of the Killing Kittens chat groups. He started to have close friends. It made him feel comfortable enough to consider attending a virtual party for the sake of size.
During a pandemic, social distancing also becomes sexual isolation for individuals and couples who wish to explore physical intimacy.
While creating a touch-sex experience online is not easy, virtual relationships can fill the longing for intimacy that many people feel.
The new experience comes in meetings on Zoom that discuss 'dirty' topics or sex parties like the one Emma attended. New methods can at least fill the void of physical sexual intercourse to some extent.

For both participants and organizers, online sex-related meetings can be a substitute for physical intercourse. This is also the psychological help they really need.

But still, a lot of people build intimacy online. Last October, the manufacturer of soft drinks and alcohol, Basic, surveyed 2,000 single people under the age of 35 in the United States.
They found that 58% of their respondents had had virtual sex during the Covid-19 pandemic. Of that number, 77% of them had virtual sex with people who had never had direct sex.
And Bumble's survey of 5,000 singles in the UK, 32% of whom cited 'digital intimacy' as important in relationships, both during lockdown and when the tightening was lifted.
For people like Emma, who tried this method last year, virtual sex parties, meetings at Zoom about sex education, remotely controlled sex toys, and involvement in sexually open communities have proven to be satisfying sexual desires. It is also a cure for the longing for intimacy.
"There is great sexual satisfaction when I can watch and be watched," said Emma, who describes herself as a person who likes to flaunt sexuality.
And watching a partner actually having sex is different from watching pornography. There is a personal feel to the activity and the virtual sexual relationship that Emma has.
Emma says she and other single participants in virtual sex events form close relationships because they share at the same level.
