It takes a village...
Lunchtime conversation with guest Keltie Butler
Emily invites Keltie to share her story as a first-generation farmer in Pictou County. With help from mentors, neighbours, friends and family, Keltie and her partner have transformed a hayfield into a thriving vegetable farm. Their CSA’s have raised the level of food security in the community, and visitors stop by for an up-close experience of the land, the seeds, the seasons and the vegetables.
During the final half hour, we will engage in small breakout groups and then return for a final Q&A with our guest.
Keltie Butler and her partner Michael are entering their 9th season as farmers at Small Holdings Farm in Pictou County where they grow and sell vegetables, herbs, cut flowers and, in the spring, seedlings for home gardens. Keltie grew up in Cape Breton she started farming in 2015 when she and Michael created a small CSA for friends and family in Halifax while working their city jobs part time. Keltie loves farming — as well as cooking, eating, reading, music, friends, the outdoors and much more.
