Program Summary

This summer, get hands on experience with coding at an introductory level using the Swift programming language and your iPad. Each morning, we will learn fundamentals common to most programming languages as well as make entertaining projects that perform all sorts of fun and useful activities. For our older students, we will take the afternoons to explore how to build apps for the iPhone and iPad using SwiftUI, a revolutionary framework first introduced in 2019. By the end of our week together, all students will have a good foundation for writing code, and the best part is that all of that ability leaves the camp with them because they can continue to make programs and apps as they see fit.

What You'll Need

All you'll need is an any iPad or Mac that's running Swift Playground, a totally app available for download. If you're using an iPad, an attachable keyboard is nice to have but certainly not required.

Why Code?

In 2007, the very first iPhone came out and it changed the way we do a lot of things. There’s a phrase that comes to mind that sums this up nicely: “There’s an app for that”. Since then, computing has come a vastly long way, and we’re entering a world where everything is being done digitally, and we’re seeing multiple breakthroughs a day in the realm of things like A.I., software, and more. Using a computer is one thing, but having the literacy and foundation to understand how it works has already become a paramount skill for people to possess. At this camp, I will help create this literacy within the students who choose to attend. Furthermore, I think it’ll be a lot of fun and create new avenues of confidence and even careers down the road. Children with coding literacy have created some astonishing and truly powerful things, which is ultimately what led to Apple creating the annual Swift Student Challenge to foster growth in this field. The incredible thing about coding is that once you lock down the basics, you can represent anything with it, be it video games, all kinds of apps, safety tools, and more. The goal of this camp isn’t just to have students copy items and call it a day–it’s to give them a springboard where they dare ask themselves “what if?”.
