Localhost: Omar and Andrés on the Folk Computer Gadget
🤲 A Physical Open-Source Computing System
Come to Recurse Center's July Localhost!
Localhost is a series of technical talks in NYC given by members of the Recurse Center community. For every event, we set aside seats for the public.
Omar and Andrés on the Folk Computer Gadget
Folk Computer is an open-source 'physical computing system' that Andrés and Omar have been developing since 2022. (You might have seen the Folk system that Jessie Grosen set up at the RC hub!)
Folk is an alternative to traditional mouse-and-keyboard or touchscreen computing: it (typically) uses a camera and projector mounted above a table. 'Programs’ within Folk are individual pieces of paper, written in a custom reactive programming language. You put a program on the table to execute it.
They've been working on a portable Folk system that is a single, self-contained, handheld device: the 'Folk gadget'. They'll show it off, talk about its origins and about challenges in building and operating it, and explain some ideas for it that they're excited about (QR scanner, lamp, escape room, drag-and-drop, Mario Galaxy...).
