About Event

Toronto is home to a growing start-up scene, but an often-overlooked part of this environment are those entrepreneurs who are focusing on social problems.  Whether they are starting for-profit businesses and employment social enterprises or more traditional nonprofits or charities, these entrepreneurs and their partners will play an important part in making Toronto a progressive and inclusive city.

To kick off the Social Ventures Zone's 10th anniversary event series, Join Toronto Metropolitan University’s pioneering social business incubator as we learn from the models and success stories of some of Toronto’s leading social entrepreneurs, investors, and partners that are supporting their growth.

This free event, supported by the City of Toronto's BIC Grant Program and Toronto's Centre for Social Innovation (CSI), will feature top voices in Ontario's social innovation landscape:

  • Moderator Helen Burstyn, C.M., Managing Director at Crescent Investment Partners, Principal Chair at Burstyn Inc., and the former Chair of the Ontario Trillium Foundation

  • Panelist Leslie Woo, Chief Executive Officer, CivicAction, Founder, She Builds Cities, and former Chief Planning Officer at Metrolinx

  • Panelist Laurinda Lee-Retter, Founder, Kind Karma Company, and SVZ Graduated Social Entrepreneur

  • Panelist Darren Perlman, Co-Founder & CEO, Spotwork, and current SVZ Social Entrepreneur
