“Most VCs are men; they don’t understand why a consumer might need a lipstick that lasts three hours longer,” ~ Vineeta, Co-founder of SUGAR Cosmetics.
Fundraising was just one of the issues that SUGAR cosmetics faced. There was pandemic, scaling without over-relying on performance marketing, operations, and other issues that come with running a DTC brand.
But despite the pandemic, it grew 6x in the last two years & has a presence in 10,000+ retail stores across 130 cities.
SUGAR cosmetic was founded in 2012 by IIM Ahmedabad alumni and husband and wife duo, Vineeta Singh and Kaushik Mukherjee. Today it's a $100M company. Every month, more than 250 million people engage with SUGAR’s in-house content, through their app & social media. Their app has more than 1M downloads.
And it's profitable!
The road to building this wasn't easy or quick.
“It has taken 742 Makeup Artists, 16 Supervisors, 46 Sales Managers, 80 of us in office and another 60 in the warehouse to get us to these 10,000+ retail stores.” ~Kaushik Mukherjee, Co-founder of SUGAR
And Kaushik, the Co-founder & COO of SUGAR Cosmetics, has a lot of learnings to share with young entrepreneurs.
He is an alumnus of BITS Pilani and IIM Ahmedabad. He is also an Ironman triathlete and marathoner. Probably that taught him a lot about patience, consistency, and hard work.
