Foundations of Gender & Sexuality

Tuesday, September 26 | 7pm-8pm | via Zoom

This program covers the foundations of gender and sexuality – split into three sections. The “Gender Basics” section defines the following terms: Sex Assigned at Birth, Intersex, Gender Binary, Gender, Cisgender, Transgender, Non-Binary Umbrella +, Gender Presentation, Femininity, Masculinity, Androgyny, and Drag. This is followed by the section “Attraction & Sexuality”, which discusses the five primary types of attraction and their relationship with sexuality; we also explore the terms asexual, aromantic, allo, hetero, queer, gay, lesbian, bi, omni, pan, and poly. We wrap up by discussing how we describe the community, including the acronym 2SLGBTQIA+, what it means, and its historical connotations; some of the history around the different flags and acronyms; what it means to be part of the rainbow community, and why terminology matters.

Intersectionality, Priviledge & Discrimination

Tuesday, October 17 | 7-8pm | via Zoom

The opening section provides a brief history of the term “intersectionality” and what it means. Next, we dive into the concept of privilege through the Coin Model, and explore how power, oppression, discrimination, and privilege are related. In examining discrimination, we discuss the harms of microaggressions and common examples directed towards bisexual, asexual & aromantic folks, and trans individuals. Next, we examine different types of direct, indirect, and systemic discrimination, defining amatonormativity, cisnormativity, heteronormativity, and transmisogynoir. We finish by examining the impact of systemic prejudice.

This workshop includes an interactive activity to challenge participants to “check their privilege”.

Pronouns & Misgendering 101

Thursday, November 2 | 7:30-8:30pm | via Zoom

In this program, we discuss what pronouns are and why they matter. We explore different types of pronouns (null, exi, multi, they/them, and neopronouns), including a brief history of each. There are also examples and practice activities for various pronouns. Moving further, we examine some basics around pronoun etiquette, what misgendering is, how it is harmful, and some “do’s and don’ts” when one makes a mistake – along with some tips on practicing pronouns.

Allies & Accomplices

Thursday, November 23 | 7:30pm-8:30pm | via Zoom

We begin this program by critically examining performative allyship, including warning signs and the consequences. Next, we explore the difference between “accomplice” and “ally”, and some suggestions on how to engage in each of these practices while enacting systemic change. This program includes different scenarios to invite people to explore how they would respond as allies.
