Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Let’s talk about breakfast for ourselves as parents. As you try to get yourself and kids ready to get out the door, many of us may forget about feeding ourselves. Erika asked a great question in our Sprinkles Parents FB group and was hoping to share the wisdom: 
Take time in the morning to treat yourself either with Latte/Espresso and quiche or something to celebrate post-kids drop-off and everyone being out the door. 
Make your breakfast the night before so it’s not falling to the wayside in the morning. Try overnight oats, hard boiling some eggs (or just buy them already hard boiled from Costco).
Smoothies are easy to get lots of nutrition in your body easily and on the go through a straw. It’s great for picky-eating toddlers too so you may be able to get a winner for everyone. Also, it's great to drink while breastfeeding since it’s through a straw and if it spills on the baby (unless it’s hot drinks) it’s sticky but fine. 

Warnings: Do not fall into the trap (GUILTY) of eating the kids half eaten/leftover breakfast. Your kids may have only had one bite of a now-congealed oatmeal or insisted on a second waffle you knew they would never eat. You deserve your own delicious and nutritious breakfast.

☕🧇Expresso or Half Eaten Waffle? 


Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Anyone have a kid that loves to be held? Or is going through a phase of just wanting to be in your arms? The hardest is when you’re pregnant and have to say no or just know that you’re going to be in pain if you agree to their demands. 
The other day,  my daughter just wanted to be held only by me and I felt like a hostage. Inside my head  I was begging for help but I never actually was able to say anything out loud about wanting help because:
I’m the mom
It’s my job to watch her
I should be able to handle this
No one else ever complains 
It’s no big deal 
She will get big one day and I will miss this
My partner will try and help but she’ll only want me 
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I decided to walk away and get some space from her, knowing that I was inviting a tantrum. 
Trusting others to help you or receiving help as parents is hard.  The secret to this success is support systems in place. It’s communicating with what you actually need before you explode. It’s setting realistic expectations of parenthood (I didn’t get the memo on that one..) etc.

Hold me & Held hostage

Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Recently, many people have reached out asking about emotional regulation struggles with their kids.  It’s hard to watch your kids as they melt down completely onto the grocery store floor (or worst case even lick it) or the playground (or from my personal experience- when not getting the first piece of cake at the party). That’s why I honestly feel like we attend less in-person events because it’s hard to balance my kids' needs, hold conversations with other parents, and participate in the event. 

                     (Not actual kid referenced below at playground)
Yesterday at the playground, I noticed a little girl having a tantrum (well, it was more like a full on meltdown, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt). Her dad put down his beer (that was his parenting tip: “always have a beer in hand at the park”)  and was able to talk her off the ledge by distracting her onto something else instead of focusing on just trying to calm her down because she was fixated on what she wanted.
When I spoke to him afterwards, he shared that he blacks out, his heart starts pounding (I thought it was only me who felt this), and approaches his daughter  the same way he would negotiate with a drunk friend like he’s done so many times before.  
When my son has a tantrum and cries, I feel super embarrassed, anxious, and want to crawl under a rock to hide myself.  One great resource has been  Mom's Strong Willed boys. This group has taught me some tools and techniques to help when these emotional outbursts happen. 
Also, Occupational Therapy helps with kids' emotional regulation. It’s interesting to learn what are normal behaviors for toddlers and where the line is for sensory overloads. Check out Baby Builders if you feel your kids may need some help. Also there are structured small playgrounds and resources through The Center For Childhood Learning. 
All this to say, it all is part of the emotional weight of parenthood to figure out the best resources and solutions for your families.

Meltdowns and more

Hi Sprinkles Parents,
If we got a $1 for every “peekaboo” we have said or played, we would all be millionaires. 
With toddlers, peekaboo evolves into hide and seek. It’s my favorite game because as the hider, I sneak into my bed and hide, or a closet to write this email :) As the seeker, I can drag it out too, and clean the house as I seek.  Who knew hide and seek was such a genius game for parents to play!

If we got a $1 for every “peekaboo” we have said or played, we would all be millionaires. 

With toddlers, peekaboo evolves into hide and seek. It’s my favorite game because as the hider, I sneak into my bed and hide, or a closet to write this email :) As the seeker, I can drag it out too, and clean the house as I seek.  Who knew hide and seek was such a genius game for parents to play!

Tax Day is approaching or is it? Typically it falls on April 15th but there's all kinds of different rules now about it being postponed, thanks Google. But, always check with a tax accountant for any advice. 
Doing your taxes can be a tedious chore: "Where is my W-2" "Let's gather the papers made from trees and E-Docs" " What password did I use? Did I just add a special character at the end, or did I add a number too?" "Where are my donation slips?!" 
Here's a question I'd like to ask the Hive Mind: If you get a return, what do you do with it? 
Apply it to credit cards 
Invest in savings (not only yours but also your kids) 
Splurge on an item for your house 
Go on a trip 
Buy Girl Scout cookies

If you have a partner, how do you agree on how much to put towards what? 
We learned that a Super Sprinkles Couple whose name will be kept Super Secret, has a Google Doc where they list out items that should have money thrown into, and then a few columns for negotiations. They share that the negotiations are a fun way to communicate and compromise. While they didn't splurge on anything exciting, they did report that the reward this year was that all 5 family members got a generous deposit into their savings account.

Rain, Rain, Go the Eff Away! ☔
To say that the rain is making us stir crazy, would be an understatement. When we secured a sponsor and thoughtful partner at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry we were all sunshine's and rainbows to kick off a 4 session series of Baby Music in the Park! However, due to the weather, we've only been able to host ONE. Each week we check the weather report on Friday, then work over the weekend (as in when kiddos are not in school or childcare) to find a dry space that's free, cheap and baby friendly to host. Then along with the Monday Blues, we come up short and cancel. Again, we're working with our sponsor to figure out if we continue the sessions in the Spring or to postpone to the Summer. Please stay tuned, and of course when all else fails just scream sing any song with your baby while it's raining.

Family Taxes 

Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Three times this week (and it’s only Tuesday) parents have asked “Am I allowed to complain about parenthood? If so, for how long?”. While the answer is always “yes”, Rayz Kids founder said to me this week she is “tired and grateful”, which truly resonated. Because sometimes we are so stuck in the overwhelm and kids (maybe us) crying that we forget to be grateful for these kids. It’s even harder in these cold and rainy times when we are stuck inside and kids are fussy/watching a lot of TV.

Finally Fun

Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Are you ready for the clocks to “Spring Ahead”? Have you thought about how this will affect your baby or child’s sleep? Angela Ellsworth, Pediatric Sleep Consultant was kind enough to share with us some tips given the time transition on Sunday morning: 
1.      Go cold turkey – on Sunday, start your day at 7am, according to the clock when the time changes, and continue your usual nap schedule, milk feeds, meals and bedtime in the NEW time.  You might have some extra crankiness for a day or two, as your child adjusts to the extra hour of daytime.
2.      Adjust by 15 minutes each day for 4 days – starting on Thursday this week, get your child up for the day 15 minutes earlier, then adjust their usual daytime schedule by 15 minutes earlier all day. On Friday, go 30 minutes earlier, then Saturday 45 minutes, Sunday the full hour earlier.   For example, if you usually get your child up for the day at 7am, you’d get them up at 6:45am on Thursday, adjusting by 15 minutes per day until you get to 6am on Sunday.  Now 6am on Sunday is 7am!
3. Make sure you have blackout shades in your child's sleep space.  The clocks change due to sunlight adjustments. Since Light signals to your child's brain that it's time to wake up, the  dark space will help them sleep longer. 
4. Don’t forget to adjust your kids hatch light (or other light up clock).
If you’ve been struggling with early morning wake ups – you’re in luck! If your child has been waking at 6am, that’s now 7am on the clock.  The key here will be to continue your usual nap schedule, milk feeds, meals, and bedtime in the NEW time.

On Friday, go 30 minutes earlier, then Saturday 45 minutes, Sunday the full hour earlier.   For example, if you usually get your child up for the day at 7am, you’d get them up at 6:45am on Thursday, adjusting by 15 minutes per day until you get to 6am on Sunday.  Now 6am on Sunday is 7am!

3. Make sure you have blackout shades in your child's sleep space.  The clocks change due to sunlight adjustments. Since Light signals to your child's brain that it's time to wake up, the  dark space will help them sleep longer. 

4. Don’t forget to adjust your kids hatch light (or other light up clock).

If you’ve been struggling with early morning wake ups – you’re in luck! If your child has been waking at 6am, that’s now 7am on the clock.  The key here will be to continue your usual nap schedule, milk feeds, meals, and bedtime in the NEW time.

No words of wisdom, advice, or stories this week because because of Jury Duty. Being a parent is actually not a valid excuse to get out of service (I heard the judge mention this multiple times). It's only if you are the exclusive caretaker in the family or if on a jury not able to pay bills and as a result can't support your family. 
In fact, it’s a Sprinkles Dad behind the scenes writing this email (which I usually help edit). 
I want to give a quick shout out to the partners out there behind the scenes helping their partners shine, and an even shout out to the single parents that do it all!

Hi Sprinkles Parents,
Have you ever run super late or even forgotten to pick your kid up from school? I did it a few weeks back as I was heads down writing these emails and ASSUMED my partner was going to pick up my kids since we had swapped responsibilities that day. They, on the other hand, assumed that I was picking up the kids since I ALWAYS do it. Rest assured that it was the biggest mom guilt of my life when I got the call that my kid was with the security guard waiting for me, and then, as a domino effect, I was late to pick up my other kid as well. I share this because when I picked up my son, the teacher said, “don’t worry, parents forget to pick up their kids or run super late all the time”. 
WHAT??? 
Why hasn’t anyone ever talked about it before? 
When I told another parent about it they said, “Oh yeah, I’ve done that before.” 
As always, as a community, it’s important to share our mistakes with others so that we don’t feel bad about ourselves. We are all learning how to be parents. Just like with babies sleeping in the bed, rolling off the bed, not taking bottles, not potty training, etc., we need to make sure we’re aware that all of us are learning as well as  make mistakes, and know that Sprinkles Parents is here to help you along that journey.
