Pétanque Tournament Rules

  • Matches are played in triples, i.e. teams of 3.

  • Minimum age: 10 years. Children are under the responsibility of an adult.

  • Each player may only play in one team.

  • The sporting organization is determined by drawing lots according to the number of participants.

  • The team that throws the jack chooses the starting point by drawing a semicircle on the ground that no one can pass.

  • The jack must be between a minimum of 6 meters and a maximum of 11 meters, and at least 30 cm from the edge of the court.

  • As long as the point belongs to one team, the other team plays until it takes over the point.

  • If the jack touches the edge of the court, the current end must be replayed.

  • If one or more balls touch the edge of the court, they are canceled and must be removed from the court.

  • The team that scores in a round is the one with the ball closest to the jack. If the two closest balls belong to the same team, that team is awarded two points. And so on with three, four, five, and six balls.

  • The games will be played over time, depending on the number of triples (30min/party if 8 triples). At the end of this time, the team with the most points wins the match.

  • In the event of a tie at the end of standard time, the 2 teams decide as follows :

    • Place the jack 8 meters away.

    • A player from each team stands side by side and simultaneously throws a ball, the closest to the jack determining the winning team.

  • As we only have one court available, only the winning teams can continue the tournament.

  • Teams must referee themselves. In the event of a tie, a referee will come in to break the tie.

  • Team managers help to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly by ensuring that their players abide by these rules.
