Welcome to the School of Humanity Mission Log. We have reached the end of the month and are delighted to share the highlights from the High School from February.

☀️ What have we seen in our challenges this month?

Here are the highlights of how this month went by:
Week 1. As we reached the end of this term's challenges, we looked into reflections, recaps and takeaways from this term. 
Week 2. We explored different types of sub-challenges, examples of the iceberg model, how to find the root causes of a problem, and researching the key statistics of the problem. We brainstormed different sub-challenges that we are interested in using mind maps. By the end of this week, we came up with our own individual problem statements and made our presentations.
Week 3. During this week we took a relaxing mid-term break. It was also the time when we worked on our presentations.
Week 4. At the start of this week, we presented our sub-challenges and received peer and facilitator feedback. By the end of this week, we worked on solutions for our problem statements.

🎨 Activism through Film, Music & Art Challenge

Period poverty has led to early marriage, teen pregnancy and school dropout rates increasing among young women living in rural areas.


There are many young people in XYZ situation... who do not have access to arts activities which are important for wellness and mental health breaks.


The Influence of Films normalizing different Stereotypes and affecting Social Attitudes


The Human trafficking rate is increasing in Central Asia, with over 38,450 victims reported in 2021, while estimated only .04% of cases are identified while the rest go undetected.


Globally millions of people are facing food shortages, hunger and starvation. How can social media help solve the world food problem?


Urban environments in 2023 are unsustainable due to inadequate infrastructure, and traffic congestion & resulting high levels of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.


The general public does not care enough to take action on important issues


The distrust of information on social media leading to increasingly high depression and anxiety rates in young adolescents.

🌾 Food, Energy & Water Security Challenge

Despite the benefits of solar power, such as cost savings and reduced carbon emissions, the adoption of solar power technologies is slow due to factors such as high costs, infrastructure incompatibility, and limited public awareness, thus hindering the transition to a more sustainable energy future.


Grocery stores throw away safe-to-eat foods that are close to sell-by dates and imperfect in terms of appearance, causing foods that can otherwise be eaten to get wasted.


Countries that are dependent on fossil fuel reserves for economic stability are likely to face economic threats as fossil fuel reserves deplete and the use of renewable energy increases worldwide.


Coastal areas are often home to large cities and industrial areas, which can produce significant amounts of carbon emissions through the use of non-renewable resources such as oil and gas, resulting in poor air quality that causes health problems and environmental degradation.


The surplus food waste generated by restaurants at the end of each operating day results in financial loss, contributes to global food insecurity, and exacerbates environmental degradation.


The burning of plastic waste due to inadequate recycling practices causes the release of toxic gases that affect health.


The focus on solely profit in the construction and housing industry means that it is incredibly unsustainable, creating large amounts of carbon emissions and damaging the environment.







🌷 Flourishing

During one of our Flourishing sessions for this month, we were lucky to have the opportunity to participate in some yoga. Prior to the session, we explored a variety of different styles of yoga.
These include:
Raja Yoga: The Royal Path
We can practice this form of yoga through meditation, concentration, relaxation and breathing exercises.
Bhakti Yoga: The Path of Devotion
Ceremonies, prayers, rituals, and chanting are some of the ways we can practice Bhakti Yoga.
Jnana Yoga: The Path of Knowledge
We can practice this form of yoga through study and self-analysis.
Karma Yoga: Path of Selfless Service
This type of yoga can be practices anywhere and anytime and surrounds helping others.
Yoga has a variety of benefits, and is practice that can feel rejuvenating and allow you to push yourself mentally and physically.
Helps you to relax.
Improves sleep quality.
More energy and enthusiasm.
Helps to manage stress.
Promotes self-care.
Improves strength balance and flexibility.
We are all looking forward to continuing regular yoga practice within these sessions and expanding our knowledge with regard to the history and deeper meanings associated with yoga.

Masterclass with Shelot Masithi
Shelot Masithi is a climate justice activist and the Executive Director of She4Earth, a youth-led non-profit. She educates children and young people about climate change, biodiversity conservation, and indigenous knowledge systems. She led a wonderful session on developing the power of storytelling.

👩‍🎓 Learning Tool Spotlight

CenturyTech is an AI-based learning platform that enables the learner to learn fundamental subjects including mathematics, science, and English. In each term, every learner has to choose 3 subjects from the Century Tech units and do it asynchronously. Furthermore, Century tech has the option for learners to do exercises by learning with slides or videos
Moreover, In Century Tech each subject is divided into some small exercises which are called “nuggets”. Century Tech also carries out some diagnostics which are useful for the AI to know the strengths and weaknesses of the learner in that specific subject or exercise.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the progress report for the Future Fluencies Afterschool Program. We have reached the middle of the program and are delighted to share the progress our learners have made since they began their School of Humanity learning journey.

😍 Facilitator Feature

We would like to begin by introducing Cohort Kepler’s Learning Facilitator, Saasha Gulamani.
Saasha Gulamani is from Kenya and Australia but has been living in Dubai for more than 17 years. She recently graduated in December of 2021 from McGill University in Canada, where she majored in International Development Studies and double minored in Social Entrepreneurship and South Asian Studies. Saasha recently completed an internship with Deloitte in Dubai within the IT Audit department where she specialized in data analytics. Saasha loves creating social impact especially when it involves women empowerment and the youth. As of now, she holds the position of Executive Director at For The Menstruator (FTM). Saasha is also heavily involved in youth-based projects and camps within Dubai.
Saasha is very excited to be the learning facilitator for Cohort Kepler and the hybrid program with School of Humanity.

☀️Investigating Real-world Challenges with Industry Mentors

As you may know at School of Humanity, we learn by engaging, investigating and acting on real-world challenges. For each challenge, learners are paired with an industry mentor who supports the learners with the content knowledge and wisdom needed for them to carry out their challenge. 
Meet Cohort Kepler's mentors below:

​Ayesha is an engineer, developer, designer solutions architect, and experienced workshop facilitator. She works with tech labs, such as The Assembly, to develop and deliver project based workshops involving cutting edge technology like leap motion, projection mapping, CNC plotting, 3D printing and virtual reality. She leverages her prototyping experience to enable learners to design their own solutions to challenges.


Laiyla is the Founder & CEO of Buroluxe Group, a luxury lifestyle consultancy company. Laiyla is an advocate of empowering women and youth through knowledge, accessibility and inclusivity across multidisciplinary industries.


Steve has worked in education and training for 20 years. In 2016, he became the first Head of Digital Learning and Innovation across the JESS school group before moving on to work as an education consultant in 2019. Steve has won awards from Apple, Microsoft, GESS, BETT and EdTech Digest for his work in integrating technology in learning and professional development. In 2017, he hosted the world’s first professional development sessions inside virtual reality and in 2018 he co-hosted the world’s first global lesson inside VR alongside Pixar co-founder Loren Carpenter. Steve now works as a consultant and project manager in the field of NFTs, Web3 and the Metaverse.


Maddalena worked in the United Nations most of her career, where she was also doing a lot of teaching in future thinking. She taught university students and post graduate students since her early twenties. She is currently the Future and Foresight Expert at the Early Childhood Authority in Abu Dhabi and a verified contributor at the Dubai Future Foundation in Dubai.


​Tarik is a serial entrepreneur, cryptocurrency advisor and educator. More recently, he served as a science and technology researcher at the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Center. He also oversaw marketing, social analytics and outreach at Google and has been a blockchain advisor at Umbrellab. His areas of expertise include astrophysics, robotics, cyber-security, consumer psychology, macroeconomics, cryptocurrency and blockchain.


In October, learners began the ENGAGE phase by exploring their challenges and by diving deeper into sub-challenges, investigating them from an interdisciplinary perspective. They started by asking questions and developing their own personal learning plans. 
In November, the learners worked through the INVESTIGATE phase of the program, whereby they began to research and find out more about their chosen area of interest for their personal project. They also developed problem analysis skills and explored how to do a root-cause analysis to really understand the problem that they have chosen to focus their personal project on.
In January, the learners began the ACT phase of the program, whereby they are developing a solution to their problem statement. In their core sessions they have explored rapid prototyping, project management and data analysis skills. During the ACT phase, learners work independently or in small groups, to design and build a prototype which they will later present to the group.
In addition to the core workshops, every 3 weeks the learners have had a Pathway Advisory session. These aim to prepare the learners for their future, looking at topics such as how to write a resume, effective networking and looking at Universities of the Future.

🌷 Embarking on a path to Human Flourishing

Over the last few months, learners have embarked on their flourishing journey with their Flourishing Facilitator, Aimee Bobruk. Please watch the video to hear Aimee tell us what flourishing is all about and to discover a quick meditation technique.


💬 Learning from Inspiring Speakers during Masterclasses

The masterclasses are an opportunity for the learners to meet guest speakers who will either give them a deep dive into a specific area of expertise or who will share with the learners their life stories, explaining why they do what they do and how they got to be there.
Over the last 3 months we have had 4 masterclasses:
1st Masterclass with School of Humanity Alumni
School of Humanity alumni, Jana Eissa and Srimayi Vinod, discussed their experience at School of Humanity and gave some tips and tricks for how to stay on track and maintain good time management.


2nd Masterclass with Dr. Melissa Butt, Head of Science and Robotics at Taleem School and Robotics Expert
Dr. Melissa Butt is the Head of Science and Robotics at Taaleem School in Dubai. Prior to joining Taaleem, Melissa founded and was the Managing Director of Discovery STEM, a robotics program for all ages in Sheffield and was the Chair of World Educational Robotics, UK. She is the Co-founder of Invent Future Global and has worked in partnership with Consequential Robotics for 2 years.
Dr. Melissa Butt discussed the use of technology in the future of work in this interactive and practical session.


3rd Masterclass with Salim Essaid
Over the past decade, Salim has covered breaking news and features for outlets including TIME Magazine, CNN, NHK World, Agence France Presse (AFP) and the Associated Press (AP).
Until the end of 2020, Salim was the lead reporter on Euronews' weekly Inspire Middle East, and later the host of Sci-Tech. He produced more than 120 episodes exploring the latest happenings in the MENA region’s technology, business, and cultural scene.
As a moderator and host he has led panel discussions about how fintech is empowering young Arabs to save and invest, cryptocurrencies' potential to liberate migrant workers, and how to effectively report from the Middle East for a global audience.
Over the years, his career saw him use data visualization to investigate New York's secret surveillance policies over Arab and Muslim Americans, explore the denial of women’s citizenship rights in Jordan, cover the protests over the 2017 relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, explain the potential impact of cryptocurrencies on the UAE's remittance industry, and highlight how AI systems can be built to be biased.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Arabic and Japanese from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master’s degree in broadcasting from the Columbia School of Journalism in New York.


4th Masterclass with Maia Zennie
Maia is a polyglot American raised across the Middle East. She brings a synthesis of education and entrepreneurship having worked with various demographics in Web3, philanthropy, and youth empowerment across the tech and Web3 ecosystems. A Rotaractor by choice, fellowship through service is a key priority to building and leading a responsible society that understands: impact is independent from age and experience!
Maia believes in the importance of youth inclusion and development in Web3 as an opportunity to influence a generation of pioneers and grow a community of disruptors and builders in the crypto space through Youth DAO and the Dubai Blockchain Student Network. She is currently building the communities to bring active involvement in local and international conferences to fruition to build out a literate MENA Web3 community!


💡 What’s coming next?

The learners are now in the ACT phase of the challenge, whereby they need to design a solution and build a prototype for the problem statement that they have identified.
The learners will be presenting their project solutions on the 18th of February and then will begin their micro-internship projects the following week. The Micro-Internships are an opportunity for the learners to apply everything that they have learnt in the School of Humanity program to a real challenge set to them by our partner organizations, specifically chosen to be aligned with each specific challenge.
In the next Progress Report we will share more information about the micro-internship projects and how our learners collaborated with each other to come up with a solution.

Welcome to the progress updates for the Ascend Afterschool program. We have reached the end of the 4th month and are delighted to share what the learners have seen over these last 2 months.

☀️Designing Solutions to Real-World Challenges
As you may know, at School of Humanity, we learn by engaging, investigating and acting on real-world challenges.
Following the ENGAGE phase in month 1 and the INVESTIGATE phase in month 2, the learners have been working on the ACT phase of the program, in months 3 and 4. During this phase, the learners have explored how to organize their ideas and develop a project solution and prototype.

Micro-Internship Program with Industry Partners
The micro-internship program is an opportunity for the learners to work directly with an organization, which works in an area related to their challenge path. The learners will be introduced to the organization and will be set a real-world challenge to work on over the course of the following 3 weeks. This is a real challenge that the organization faces and they are keen to gain insight and perspective from School of Humanity learners on how to solve this specific problem.

🌷 Growing together with Human Flourishing
Over the last two months, learners have embarked on the following flourishing workshops:
What is Mindfulness? 
During this session the learners started their descent into the depth of mindfulness. They were asked to look at some of the philosophies and biases around mindfulness and to find what their own is. At the same time they started to work on resetting their breathing patterns by learning more and practicing diaphragmatic breath so that they can truly tap into their true powers.
Mindful Practice
During this session the learners were asked to deepen their understanding of various communication practices, such as listening mindfully and empathically or communicating by aiming at avoiding miscommunication.
The Cosmic Perspective
During this workshop they looked at the practical implications of the cosmic perspective to see how one can rethink their actions, behavior and contribution to our planet and also some of the philosophies and techniques of tapping into states of awe to leverage it in our everyday lives.
Identities
In this workshop the learners embarked on one of the most exciting journeys of all times. Exploring our Selves. They looked at different theories of self and personal identities to see how it shapes our perception of the world; try and cover some of the philosophical and a psychological vantage points to gain a better understanding and take all that theory to a practical level.
Personal Narratives
We all have our own stories. What is more, we are the protagonists of our own story. If that is true, we also have the power to gain a deep understanding of our story and change the narrative when we want to change the course of our life. In this module the learners took a closer look at how our stories affect our brain, our emotional state and where the power of our won narratives lie.
The Secret Life of Emotions
Emotions are powerful forces. They can determine how we feel throughout the day, how we react and what actions we take. They can determine our present and future and at the same time allow us to empathize with other humans, share their joy or pain. In this workshop the learners learnt different techniques to be better able to uncover, process and understand their emotions.
Stress and its Management
We all experience some levels of stress in our lives, but actually as students, you often live a life equally as busy and stressful as a CEO's. The amount of stress and pressure can be manifold. At the moment you might find it difficult to change the actual circumstances, but you can always learn how to cope and lower the perceived stress. In this workshop the learners explored techniques to become better able to handle stress.

😍 Youth Mentorship with School of Humanity Alumni
School of Humanity is a demanding yet rewarding part-time program. Each learner must develop a personal project, follow core sessions, flourishing sessions, and mentorship sessions and work at their own pace on developing their skills through the skill units. We want to ensure that every learner is accompanied on this journey. Who better to accompany the current learners than the School of Humanity Alumni! These amazing young people know firsthand how to tackle these challenges and they are here to provide one-to-one support for each learner.

😍 Mentorship sessions with leading experts
In the last two months, learners have worked with their mentors to develop their project solutions.

Ayesha is an engineer, developer, designer solutions architect, and experienced workshop facilitator. She works with tech labs, such as The Assembly, to develop and deliver project based workshops involving cutting edge technology like leap motion, projection mapping, CNC plotting, 3D printing and virtual reality. She leverages her prototyping experience to enable learners to design their own solutions to challenges.


Craig is a VR consultant, Instructional Design Expert for 3D Virtual Worlds and High School Design and Technology Teacher. He help schools and educational institutions develop their understanding of how VR can transform learning.


Michael is an expert who has been involved in diagnostic imaging and image guided therapeutic products and services as well as other related medical technology ventures as founder, innovator, CEO and investor. He is also an ambassador, coach, and trainer for OpenExO and a master Launchpad mentor for the Purpose Alliance.


Tarik is a serial entrepreneur, cryptocurrency advisor and educator. More recently, he served as a science and technology researcher at the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Center. He also oversaw marketing, social analytics and outreach at Google and has been a blockchain advisor at Umbrellab. His areas of expertise include astrophysics, robotics, cyber-security, consumer psychology, macroeconomics, cryptocurrency and blockchain.

"My role as a Learning Facilitator varies and depends on the situation. During our live workshops, I deliver content that enables and provides our learners with various tools, skills, and strategies that they can apply in their day to day lives and in the long-run. Outside of the live workshops, I play the role of a mentor as I guide the learners by answering their questions, providing them with clarity and even sharing my feedback on their work and progress in the program. Inside and outside of SoH, I’d like for them to know I am also a friend they can lean on."

What is your ikigai or mission in life?
I currently work as a Learning Facilitator at School of humanity and as a Learning Support at a school in Dubai. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family and close friends. Other times, you might catch me trying to teach myself something new! I am passionate about learning and educating.
What do you enjoy most about this role?
The thing I enjoy the most about this role is the amount and variation of exposure I get - from our learners, from the mentors, and even the masterclass speakers. Each day at SoH, is a day of thinking beyond the traditional methods, dreaming big and learning more.

Tima became the 1st Lebanese woman and youngest Arab to summit Mount Everest at 26 years old. On the 22nd of May, 2019 at 7:21 am, she stood gratefully and humbly on the highest mountain of the world after a two-month expedition during one of the deadliest seasons on Everest.
Tima gave an inspiring and motivational talk, sharing her experiences with the learners, and including how she manages to keep going in the face of adversity.

🧭 Tips and Recommendations as you support your child
Here are some tips for how to best support them as they work through the program:
Ask them how they are getting on with the program and what their personal project is.
Ask them to share best practices from the Human Flourishing program, such as mindfulness, concentration and stress release.
Inquire about their micro-internship program which started this month. They will be working directly with a real organization and might appreciate discussing it with you.
Ensure that they are involved in other activities outside of the School of Humanity program. As this is an afterschool program, it is important that the learners make the most of their free time to get outside and see friends and family away from the computer screen.
Ask them if they want to practice their presentation. At the end of the program the learners will be sharing their work in the showcase event. They may benefit from practicing their presentation with you prior to the event to help prepare them for public speaking.

Welcome to the School of Humanity Mission Log. We are delighted to share January’s highlights from the high school.

☀️ What have we seen in our sessions this month?

🎨 Activism through Film, Music & Art challenge
Here are the things that we learned this month:
Week 1. We gained knowledge of what activism is, its various levels, difficulties, and successes.
Week 2. We analysed various works of activism art and discovered its various forms, we also looked into the art by famous activist artists.
Week 3. We looked at a variety of other activism mediums, such as music, poetry, and film.
Week 4. We investigated social media activism, youth-led movements, and mixed-media activism.



🌾 Food, Energy & Water Security challenge
Week 1. We learned about nexus thinking from the perspectives of food, water, and energy security. We also explore other thinks like silo thinking, and interrelations between the three main resources.
Week 2. We plunged into the world of water, which is essential to human lives. Here, we explore the history of water and water-based inventions in the past, which helped a lot in revolutionizing water techniques.
Week 3. We were completely tracking our water consumption and seeing the water in different ways, for example, the water in ourselves. We also calculate the lose of water in our daily lives.
Week 4. We explore the relation between food and agriculture, we also look at the impacts of food and agriculture on our ecosystems



🌷 Flourishing

Another term means not only growing our minds but also our hearts. Flourishing has consisted of learning about our sense of self, our personal narratives, and empowering positive mindsets. This is a great chance to check in with ourselves and see how we are feeling. Sessions have been filled with new concepts and ways of growing our minds to become more open, happy, and positive! To start this year feeling smiley and excited to become better versions of ourselves.

1st Masterclass with Louis-Richard Trembley
Louis-Richard Tremblay has been an executive producer with the French program’s Interactive Studio since 2019. He first stepped into a producer role with the NFB in 2013, after a dozen or so years at CBC/Radio-Canada. Fascinated by the power of interactive experiences and media of all kinds, he has guided numerous international co-productions at the NFB, helped produce dozens of award-winning works in Canada and internationally, and regularly participates in panels, conferences, and master classes.
Louis-Richard shared examples of his work and discussed using film and interactive art to make statements.

2nd Masterclass with Kiran Momi from the London Interdisciplinary School
Kiran Momi is the Student Engagement Officer at the London Interdisciplinary School. At LIS, instead of specializing in a single subject area, the students learn through a problem-based ID approach and focus on complex problems like sustainability and inequality. Along with this, they study a range of disciplines like data science, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, and politics, and they undergo paid internships each summer with organizations like Innocent, WWF, and KPMG.
In this interactive session, the learners explored how inequality can be tackled from an interdisciplinary perspective.

👩‍🏫 Pathway Advisory & Skills Lab
At the start of January, the Skills Lab was introduced. Learners will meet up once a week and share ways to develop new and essential life skills they can use in the future. Led by Raya Bidshahri and Ayesha Farhan, students engage in activities and talk with one another to help them learn these new skills. The past few weeks, we have looked at types of essays and how to write an essay outline, all of which are incredible skills to be learning. We have analyzed personal essays, creative essays, and the importance of each one and when we will need to use them.
Pathway advisory is an amazing opportunity to discover more about what WE want to do after our time at School of Humanity. This term, we have already looked at scheduling, credit tracking, and most recently, universities, which happen to be overall favorites. Although not all students want to go to university, a lot of what we are taught can help us with knowing how to apply for jobs too!
In the following sessions, we will have the opportunity to meet people who have recently applied to universities and ask questions about the experience. Learning from others’ past experiences helps guide us in our own.

What do we do at the club?
We improve our debate and public speaking skills here.
What did we do this month?
We have looked at fish bowl discussions, played argumentative games, looked into debate competitions, and tried presidential speeches—why do we think we should become president of a country?
What were the debate topics?
Companies should be required to hire 50% male and 50% female employees.
We should all be feminists.
Everyone should have the right to own a gun.
Religion should be kept completely separately from education.
Four topics equal four weeks.😉

📸 Photography Club
What do we do at the club?
We use photography to learn about the world and the environment around us. Our main goals are to improve our understanding of the process of creating an impactful photograph, both individually and as a group. This will culminate in an exhibition.
What did we do this month?
We are beginning with a look at the rule of thirds and how we can take different types of pictures to follow that rule and also break it!

💸 Young Investors Society Club
What do we do at the club?
We learn the foundations of investing—how to do that—by discovering rules and looking into different ways of investing.
What did we do this month?
We learned the 7 golden rules of investing and realized: What is more beneficial? To have $100 now or a Mercedes in a year's time?

What do we do at the club?
We're working on the "Mission Log," which tells you how this month went.
What did we do this month?
We separated our roles, added more unique features, and released a new “Mission Log.”

📖 Reading Exploration

Reading exploration and how does it work? 
It's very straightforward. Every learner reads (or listens to) at least one book per term. Books can be both fiction and nonfiction. 
They can choose any book that is related to the challenge they have chosen. Any books not on the recommended list must be approved by SoH. During community time, we have monthly discussions about the books we are reading! They can create an artefact to demonstrate their book/learning if they wish (book review, mind-maps, etc).

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the progress updates for the Summer School. We have reached the end of week 2 and are delighted to share what the learners have seen over the last 2 weeks.
☀️Investigating Real-world Challenges
As you may know, At School of Humanity, we learn by engaging, investigating and acting on real-world challenges.
In week 1, learners began the ENGAGE phase by exploring challenges such as Creating Virtual Worlds, the Future of Money, and Art with Technology. They started by asking questions and developing their own personal learning plans.
In week 2, the learners worked through the INVESTIGATE phase of the Summer School program, whereby they began to research and find out more about their area of interest. They also developed problem analysis skills.





🌷 Beginning a path to Human Flourishing
Over the last two weeks, learners have embarked on the following flourishing workshops:
Introduction to Flourishing - Orientations Session We looked at why Flourishing is important and how it is relevant in terms of learners’ progress, and completion of the program, but most importantly as an imprescriptible life skill.
Overcoming the Ego & Collaboration What is our Ego? Is it useful or can it cause trouble for us? In what ways can our Ego stand in the way of working well with others? We looked at how we can overcome our egos and learn to collaborate with others.
Growth Mindset This week we explore different mindsets and learn about the growth mindset in terms of our personalities, intellect, and attitudes. We learned how to adopt a growth mindset for the rest of the program.

The masterclasses are an opportunity for the learners to meet guest speakers who will either give them a deep dive into a specific area of expertise or who will share with the learners their life stories, explaining why they do what they do and how they got to be there.
1st Masterclass on 11th July: Art with Technology Masterclass with Luka Stanojevic
With his experience in digital marketing, UX, and development, Luka takes charge of innovation and technology at Shiny NFT, the sponsors of the Girls in Web 3.0 School of Humanity program. His past work with online trading and investment platforms has given him a deep understanding of financial markets and first-hand experience in the trading of digital assets.
In this masterclass, Luka presented how art is being affected by technology, from its creation to its creation to its proof of provenance and ownership. The masterclass was followed by a dynamic Q&A session in which the learners had the opportunity to ask Luka many question related to Art with Technology.

2nd Masterclass on 18th July with Luka and Maria from Shiny NFT
A leading creative producer in the world of luxury, Maria Popova has built her career working with fashion brands like Dior, Gucci & Balenciaga to create the most innovative and premium content in the market. Maria’s production and project management expertise, together with her passion for finance and new technology naturally led her to the field of digital entrepreneurship.
Today, Maria is the CEO & co-founder of Shiny, a metaverse ecosystem, and Everyday Goddesses, a collection aimed art growing female influence in web3, spreading blockchain knowledge & empowering artists.
With Everyday Goddesses, Maria is carving a space of her own in web3 while on-boarding female collectors & providing them with a smooth, FOMO-free experience.
Luka Stanojevic (see bio above) and Maria Popova gave a masterclass on how to develop avatars for virtual worlds where they explored the concept of avatars and their types, how to choose artistic direction when developing an avatar, technical consideration and different platforms one can work with, as well as animation & interoperability. Finally, they explored the ethical consideration one needs to be aware of when developing an avatar.

🧭 Tips and Recommendations as you support your child
Here are some tips for how to best support them as they work through the program:
Give them space to work - the learners will need to participate in live online sessions and will be expected to actively participate. As such they will need somewhere quiet and free from distraction to work from. (Please refer to the brochure on the Ergonomic Workstation for practical guidelines on an ergonomic workstation)
Remind them to move around. While the learners will need to spend a lot of time working in front of the computer, it is important that they take regular breaks and may need to be reminded to stand up and move around every so often.
Be mindful of their energy levels. It is important that the learners are eating healthily and drinking plenty of water to ensure their minds can think clearly.
Ensure that they are getting enough sleep. As previously stated, this is a demanding program and the learners will need to get enough sleep to ensure that they are working at their best.
Ask them questions about the program. The learners will be learning so many new skills and knowledge, that they might be happy and enthusiastic to share this with you.
Ask them to share best practices from the Human Flourishing program, such as mindfulness, concentration and stress release..

In this session, the learners were given an insightful and motivational talk from Larissa Moreira, 18 years old, from Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil. She is passionate about gender equality and social causes. Currently, she works in an organization called 'She is the Universe' to empower women's voices and she manages a project called Mulherando o Mundo to give career mentorship to vulnerable girls in Brazil.
Rafael Pina is 17 years old and from Portugal. He loves reading, learning and creating new things and is also really interested in sports especially skateboarding. His dream is to be a doctor and travel the world. Rafa and Larissa will share their learner Journey on the School of Humanity Ascend Program; projects, flourishing journey, obstacles, learnings, and life after the program.

2nd Masterclass on 18th July: Marketing You with Chris Colbert
Since the late 90s Chris Colbert has run and helped build several domestic and international companies focused on innovation and business optimization. After leading a strategic revamp of Scholastic’s core book club publishing business and its return to profitable growth, he joined the Harvard Innovation Labs, where he served as Managing Director.
In 2019 he left Harvard to speak to and advise organizations and countries on why and how to embrace change and the importance of adopting new behaviors to fully realize the potential of digital technologies without suffering the unintended consequences and costs. In addition to his leadership advising to the banking, health care and education industries, Chris is the author of This Is It, a provocative work on the importance of innovating oneself and about to publish his second book Technology is Dead. He speaks around the world on a range of topics including global innovation, technology stewardship and the human truth; and hosts the popular global podcast Insert:Human. He received a BA from Connecticut College and an International MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business.

☀️Investigating Real-world Challenges
As you may know, At School of Humanity, we learn by engaging, investigating and acting on real-world challenges.
In week 1, learners began the ENGAGE phase by exploring challenges such as Art with Technology, the Future of Money, and Creating Virtual Worlds. They started by asking questions and developing their own personal learning plans.
In week 2, the learners worked through the INVESTIGATE phase of the Summer School program, whereby they began to research and find out more about their area of interest. They also developed problem analysis skills.

🌷 Beginning a path to Human Flourishing
Over the last two weeks, learners have embarked on the following flourishing workshops:
Introduction to Flourishing - Orientations Session We looked at why Flourishing is important and how it is relevant in terms of learners’ progress, and completion of the program, but most importantly as an imprescriptible life skill.
Overcoming the Ego & Collaboration What is our Ego? Is it useful or can it cause trouble for us? In what ways can our Ego stand in the way of working well with others? We looked at how we can overcome our egos and learn to collaborate with others.
Growth Mindset This week we explore different mindsets and learn about the growth mindset in terms of our personalities, intellect, and attitudes. We learned how to adopt a growth mindset for the rest of the program.

The masterclasses are an opportunity for the learners to meet guest speakers who will either give them a deep dive into a specific area of expertise or who will share with the learners their life stories, explaining why they do what they do and how they got to be there.
1st Masterclass on 3rd July: Hearing from an inspiring young change-maker
In this inspirational session our guest speaker was Priyanka Karamchandani, a School of Humanity alumni. Priyanka worked on the Creating Virtual Worlds Challenge and with her team, she created a virtual world for performing scientific experiments. She shared her School of Humanity learning journey with the learners.

2nd Masterclass on 11th July: Art with Technology Masterclass with Luka Stanojevic
With his experience in digital marketing, UX, and development, Luka takes charge of innovation and technology at Shiny NFT, the sponsors of the Girls in Web 3.0 School of Humanity program. His past work with online trading and investment platforms has given him a deep understanding of financial markets and first-hand experience in the trading of digital assets.
In this masterclass, Luka presented how art is being affected by technology, from its creation to its proof of provenance and ownership. The masterclass was followed by a dynamic Q&A session in which the learners had the opportunity to ask Luka many question related to Art with Technology.

We have reached the end of week 2 and are delighted to share what the learners have seen over the last 2 weeks.<h2>​☀️Investigating Real-world Challenges</h2>​As you may know, at School of Humanity, we learn by engaging, investigating and acting on real-world challenges.​In week 1, learners began the ENGAGE phase by exploring challenges such as Sustainable Cities, the Future of Medicine, and Ethical &amp; Humane Technology. They started by asking questions and developing their own personal learning plans.​In week 2, the learners worked through the INVESTIGATE phase of the Summer School program, whereby they began to research and find out more about their area of interest. Is it useful or can it cause trouble for us? In what ways can our Ego stand in the way of working well with others? We looked at how we can overcome our egos and learn to collaborate with others.</li><li>​Growth Mindset This week we explore different mindsets and learn about the growth mindset in terms of our personalities, intellect, and attitudes. She’s most passionate about the intersections between education technologies, cognitive neuroscience, and computational linguistics. She is passionate about gender equality and social causes. Currently, she works in an organization called &#x27;She is the Universe&#x27; to empower women&#x27;s voices and she manages a project called Mulherando o Mundo to give career mentorship to vulnerable girls in Brazil.​<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/rafael-pina-1aa6a7232/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rafael Pino</a>, 17 years old and from Portugal. He loves reading, learning and creating new things and is also really interested in sports especially skateboarding. As such they will need somewhere quiet and free from distraction to work from. (Please refer to the brochure on the <a href="https://www.notion.so/879cc84cbead412e90017393b7d4a867" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ergonomic Workstation</a> for practical guidelines on an ergonomic workstation)</li><li>​Remind them to move around. While the learners will need to spend a lot of time working in front of the computer, it is important that they take regular breaks and may need to be reminded to stand up and move around every so often.</li><li>​Be mindful of their energy levels. It is important that the learners are eating healthily and drinking plenty of water to ensure their minds can think clearly.</li><li>​Ensure that they are getting enough sleep. As previously stated, this is a demanding program and the learners will need to get enough sleep to ensure that they are working at their best.</li><li>​Ask them questions about the program. The learners will be learning so many new skills and knowledge, that they might be happy and enthusiastic to share this with you.</li><li>​Ask them to share best practices from the Human Flourishing program, such as mindfulness, concentration and stress release.</li></ul></div>
