Mosuo Culture + Matriarchal Society Discussion with Miko
Date: June 21 (Sat), 3 p.m.
Location: Accent Sisters
Language: Chinese
Join us this week at Accent Sisters for a co-learning session and discussoin about China’s Mosuo matrilineal/matriarchal culture with the aid of documentary media, the book 'A Land Without Fathers or Husbands', and the event host Miko’s presentation. Miko will also host an open discussion on how Mosuo women approach intimacy, family structures, and gender roles, and reflect on the relevance and challenges of these practices in contemporary feminist and gender-discourse.
The Mosuo live in Yongning Township, Ninglang County, Lijiang, Yunnan Province, and are considered China’s only matrilineal society. In their tradition, “men do not marry, and women do not wed”—individuals live with their maternal families for life. There is no conventional marriage system, and gender relations are marked by freedom and equality. In contemporary times, Mosuo culture has inspired new ways of reimagining family, intimacy, selfhood, and feminist possibilities.
