About Event

Salsa Rueda Class forges ahead at The Range for continuing students from June 22 to July 6 2022. Level 1 starts at 7:30pm and Level 2 8:30pm. If you are uncertain of your level, or if you have questions related to class, please contact Michael at mlr24@cornell.edu.

Rueda de Casino is an excellent way to learn Salsa timing, repertoire, and lead-follow. In Rueda, dancers change partners in a Salsa "wheel," while performing steps and combinations to the arrangement of a caller. Rueda allows students to dance with various partners in fluid motion, and in a relaxed setting. In this series, we use line, single couple, and circle formats. Each of two levels has their own instructor.

Beginner Level 1 7:30-8:30pm. In our Beginner series we teach the set of steps needed to dance Cuban Salsa individually, as a single couple, and amongst multiple couples in a Rueda de Casino. These included the signature step “Guapea,” and the combinations “Dile Que No” and "Dile Que Si" (cross-body leads), “Exhibela” (right turn), and “Dame” (pronounced “da-me,” used for partner change). All content is reviewed regularly as we build technique and repertoire.

Beginner Level 2/3 8:30-9:30pm. In Level 2 we add the open break and moves built off of the open break such as "Adios" and "Enchufle." In Level 3 we add what's called the "turn on 1," a dynamic lead-follow technique which opens up Cuban Salsa repertoire and allows for a whole new way of experiencing this dance. When Level 2 & 3 are combined, we go as far as we can from 2 into 3.

Open Dance & Extra Lesson . After class, we play Salsa music, and other Latin genres upon request, so students can practice before the Intro Lesson and Party begins. A basic footwork & partner dance lesson and party follows at 9:45pm.

Footwear. Please wear comfortable fitted footwear with medium level traction and flat soles, or low heals or lifts, to facilitate movement, sustain energy, and avoid fatigue.

Registration and Payment. Advance registration through the form provided here is required to guarantee your place, and includes class at 7:30 or 8:30 (or both, depending on your level), and open dance that follows. Students staying beyond class and open dance pay a discounted event admission of $7 for the rest of the event, which includes the lesson at 9:45pm and party until 1am. We ask class registrants to "Pay What You Wish (PWYW)" for class based on what is affordable for you. A base price is set at $30 for the three week series (6/22, 6/29, 7/6), and $12 for drop-in, with discount codes which can be applied in the coupon section online: 25OFF, 50OFF, 75OFF, and 100OFF. Use the last code if you wish to pay by other means. Payment can be made by cash or check at class, or by Venmo to Salsa-Ithaca, or CashApp to $SalsaIthaca. Write "Salsa Class" plus the date(s) covered by your payment in the memo. Please be sure to answer the survey questions that accompany the registration form. If you are a continuing student and wish to take both Level 1 and Level 2/3, you may do so, and you may pay what you wish for both classes.
