​이번 강연에서는 샌프란시스코 베이 지역을 중심으로 필란트로피가 어떻게 변화해왔는지를 살펴봅니다. 재단들이 ‘사회 변화를 위한 모험 자본’ 역할을 하던 시기부터, 지역 커뮤니티가 주도하는 참여형 기금의 등장, 그리고 실리콘밸리에서 확산된 기업가형 기부 문화에 이르기까지 기부의 방식과 철학이 어떤 배경 속에서 진화해왔는지를 함께 짚어봅니다.

​Lecture1: Insights from the Philanthropic History of Silicon Valley

​🌱 How does a culture of giving take shape not through tradition alone, but through intentional design?

​This lecture explores the evolution of philanthropy in the San Francisco Bay Area, from mid-century foundations acting as “risk capital” to grassroots-led participatory funds and the rise of entrepreneurial giving.

​Drawing on cases such as the Rosenberg Foundation, the Vanguard Foundation, and the emergence of venture philanthropy in Silicon Valley, the session examines how philanthropic norms are shaped by decisions about trust, power, and community.

​The Lecture intended for audiences interested in how giving cultures evolve, how funders navigate influence and accountability, and what others might consider when designing their own approaches to philanthropy.

​In this lecture, Dr. Vera Michalchik draws on her work at Stanford’s Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative (EPLI) to explore practical strategies for partnerships centered on earned trust as well as demonstrable outcomes.

​The session will introduce key concepts such as transparency, shared learning, participatory decision-making, and the importance of organizational culture in shaping funder-grantee dynamics. Through frameworks and real-world tools developed by EPLI, the talk will offer nonprofit professionals and philanthropy practitioners an opportunity to reflect on how they might design relationships that are not only effective, but grounded in mutual respect and long-term collaboration.
