Challenges & Opportunities in EVs

In this session, Madhu Raghavan will share recent research from GM R&D focused on technical innovations in EV propulsion and battery systems. Topics will include:
Mixed chemistry packs designed to meet extreme power demands while preserving energy density
Dynamic torque modulation for maintaining motor efficiency during transient operation
“Fast as gas” megawatt charging systems aimed at dramatically reducing EV charging time
The talk will include modeling, simulation, and experimental results, offering insights into real-world challenges and opportunities in electrified propulsion system design.
Madhu Raghavan is Senior Technical Fellow and Lab Group Manager of the Battery and System Architecture Group at GM R&D. He leads work in electrified propulsion systems, including megawatt charging, mixed chemistry battery packs, and novel energy system architectures. He holds over 300 patents, is a Fellow of ASME and SAE, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Madhu earned his B.Tech from IIT-Bombay, M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford, and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
