U-M EV Center Surge Session Webinar:

Challenges & Opportunities in EVs

Date/Time: Friday, April 25, 2–3:00 p.m.

In this session, Madhu Raghavan will share recent research from GM R&D focused on technical innovations in EV propulsion and battery systems. Topics will include:

  • Mixed chemistry packs designed to meet extreme power demands while preserving energy density

  • Dynamic torque modulation for maintaining motor efficiency during transient operation

  • “Fast as gas” megawatt charging systems aimed at dramatically reducing EV charging time

The talk will include modeling, simulation, and experimental results, offering insights into real-world challenges and opportunities in electrified propulsion system design.


Madhu Raghavan is Senior Technical Fellow and Lab Group Manager of the Battery and System Architecture Group at GM R&D. He leads work in electrified propulsion systems, including megawatt charging, mixed chemistry battery packs, and novel energy system architectures. He holds over 300 patents, is a Fellow of ASME and SAE, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Madhu earned his B.Tech from IIT-Bombay, M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford, and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
