Carbon Credibility: Measuring Real Climate Impacts Behind Net-Zero Claims
Are net-zero efforts actually delivering the climate impacts they promise? How do we accurately measure carbon removal in our complex climate system? What role does the scientific community play in carbon removal calculations?
As part of our carbon removal series we will be chatting with climate scientist Alex MacIsaac, a PhD candidate at Simon Fraser University. Alex's research focuses on the Earth's climate response to human activities and assessing the gap between companies' and countries' carbon removal accounting and their actual environmental impacts.
During this in-depth conversation, we’ll cover:
Where does the concept of net-zero come from, and what is the climate goal of net-zero?
The gaps in our current carbon removal measurement models and risks for our climate system.
The relationship between policy, business, and scientific communities in tracking and measuring our true ability to remove and store carbon.
Following engaging conversations with the policy firm Carbon Removal Canada (January) and Planetary (February), we are excited to hear from the scientific community on how carbon removal impacts the climate and how we quantify it.
What to expect
All are welcome - these events are an opportunity to learn about climate solutions and connect with like-minded folks in a friendly setting.
📍Venue: The Happy Goat Cafe in Sandy Hill. Drinks and snacks are available to buy (and support our hosts).
🎟️ Tickets: The event is free for everyone, or you can support future events with a "Pay what you can" ticket!
⏰ Agenda:
6:30 PM - Mingle & say hello
7 - 7:45 - Conversation with Alex & audience Q&A
7:45 - 8:30 - Stick around to socialize and continue the conversation
We will be concluding our focus on carbon removal in April with the TerraFixing team before switching gears and shedding some light on other major climate topics (Teaser: Financing Climate and Food!). Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.
If you find value in these events and our community of climate professionals, please share this event with your friends, colleagues, and network.
Special shout-out to The Happy Goat (Sandy Hill) for supporting us month after month.
