About Event

How do you learn from the notes you take from articles, books, videos, and other sources?

Chances are, you are a notes hoarder like many. You're great at capturing notes, but don't have a process to distill the lessons from them.

Sönke Ahrens popularized the idea of a slip-box—or Zettelkasten—in his 2017 book How to Take Smart Notes. In it, he described the knowledge management system of the prolific academic Niklas Luhmann, who penned over 70 books and 400 academic papers in the span of 30 years.

While having a Zettelkasten is great if you're a writer, it's also an excellent tool for learning. Large part of learning is attaching new knowledge to what you already know, and writing in Roam is the perfect tool for that.

When you maintain a Zettelkasten—a text-based conversation partner—you're seeing what you know repeatedly, and in different contexts. A Zettelkasten has learning principles like reflection, elaboration, spaced and interleaved practice built-in.

In this open Salon, I'll show you how to get started creating your own Zettelkasten—based on the approach as taught in Roam Book Club (facilitated by Beau Haan). As a bonus I'll also teach you how to turn notes into flashcards à la Anki.

The final 30 minutes are reserved for Q&A.
