The City of God (First Half, Books I-XII)

This text is difficult but, I have found, extremely rewarding; the attitude and ambition is so alien to the modern frame of mind that to really penetrate this text is almost psychedelic. It's really quite phenomenal what St. Augustine is saying.
Books I-XII will require about 8 hours of focused reading. Do not get bogged down by particular words or sentences; just do your best, complete the reading, and try to get a personal sense of what he's doing and trying to say.
While reading, please prepare some written observations, or at the very least some questions for discussion.
I'll begin with some remarks on what I find most interesting, but these meetings are primarily for you to develop your own ideas around the material.
