Venue: ArtVerse, 5 bis rue Beauce, 75003
Tommy Hollenstein is an American abstract impressionist painter and object sculptor. After becoming quadriplegic from a bicycle accident in 1985, he began creating art using his wheelchair wheels. The wheels, soaked in paint, traversed a thousand canvases, forming unique textures and patterns. Hollenstein’s works are collected by renowned figures such as Ringo Starr, Elton John, Slash, and James Franco. He donates his works and sales proceeds to various charities and continues teaching art to children who use wheelchairs.
Foodmasku is a multimedia artist based in New York. His early works include a series of photos of gunshot scars, and during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, he began creating masks from food, inspired by a pickle face filter in a Zoom meeting. Foodmasku symbolically expresses the meanings of life and culture through these edible masks. The New York Times selected his Instagram account as one of the “five art accounts to follow,” and he represented the “Zero Hunger” goal at the UN Food Systems Summit and the UN Sustainable Development Goals Summit.
Aesthetic philosopher John Dewey once said, “Art is the reflection and part of life.” Hollenstein and Foodmasku’s works are manifestations of this idea. They transform their physical and mental suffering into artistic mediums. Hollenstein challenges the conventions surrounding disability, using his wheelchair as an artistic tool to create complex patterns and textures, intuitively connecting his lines to life itself. Foodmasku, by turning everyday food items into artistic mediums, navigates the boundaries between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
This duo exhibition at ArtVerse introduces the unique artistic worlds of these two artists, overturning conventional perceptions of trauma and disability and demonstrating that creativity knows no physical limits. It raises questions about the intense relationship between life and art, expanding the boundaries of creation and showcasing how art can be integrated into life through their works.
