Drawing Play-Date: June
The monthly free meet-up for everyone!
Hosted by Robyn Hepburn, where we use our imaginations, scribble freely, and I talk a good bit of nonsense.
Time to draw some birdies.
This will be an easy-going, playful session where we take inspiration from the bird world and reduce our feathery friends to their silliest, simplest forms. Think blobs with beaks, fluff-on-a-stick, that kind of thing.
Why? Well, first of all, it’s fun. But also, it’s a brilliant exercise in simplification and stylisation. By distilling these feathery creatures down to their most basic shapes, we get to play with what really makes a bird look like a bird. It’s a handy approach for anything we want to draw, especially when we’re trying to develop our own style or make characters more expressive.
We’ll build a Squiggle Database together, try out some quick-fire sketches with short timers, and see just how far we can push the idea of “bird-ness” before it disappears entirely.
Be prepared...
...to embrace the absurd. Bring something that makes big, bold blobs quickly but also dries fast - like thick markers, gouache, or anything else you love to make a mess with - and something else that can draw over the mess - like pencil crayon, oil pastels, or acrylic pens.
This call is suitable for all ages and all drawing abilities—so bring your children, friends, neighbours, or pets along (especially if your pet is a bird).
