Insight Session: Reframing AI in Civil Society, with Jonathan Tanner
It may feel as though public discourse around AI often does not include voices and perspectives from civil society — and this feeling would be perfectly justified.
In this session we will be joined by Jonathan Tanner, who will present findings from a recent Rootcause study which looks into the narrative economy which sits behind AI coverage. The study examines 30,000 Youtube videos, and thousands of print media articles in order to better understand the frames through which AI is understood by the public, and to quantify the amount of mainstream media coverage given to civil society (spoiler: not much).
Here are some key findings that we will delve into in the session:
The majority of AI content on Youtube does not engage with the social, political, or moral aspect of the technology’s adoption
Videos that focus on global or existential risks have extremely high numbers of plays per video compared to other content
Corporate news and AI trends dominate print media articles, with 40% of articles tagged for these categories
