About Event

Hosted by Knowledge Quarter and Somers Town Community Association, this event explores how retrofitting, low-carbon design, and community-led planning can drive sustainable, equitable development – by prioritising repair over replacement and putting people at the heart of change.

In a city defined by constant redevelopment, what does it really mean to live in a growing London, especially in the Knowledge Quarter? As the built environment expands and London works towards net zero, emissions and air pollution from construction continue to increase, with significant consequences for local people.

This event challenges this narrative of growth. What if growth meant repairing instead of replacing, working with what we already have, and putting communities at the centre of change?

We’ll explore how retrofitting, low-carbon design, and care-centred planning can drive both climate action and social equity. These solutions aren’t without challenges; retrofitting complex buildings, shifting mindsets, and meaningfully involving communities in technical processes, demand time, trust, and collaboration. But through co-design, education, and inclusive decision-making, we can empower communities and residents to have a greater say in the future of their neighbourhoods, London and the planet.

Join spatial practitioners, developers, and community organisers as we discuss what sustainable, equitable development looks like, and how we can build it together. Hear from speakers including:

  • Sarah Elie MBE, Executive Director, Somers Town Community Association (STCA)

  • Deepika Kanthavara Madhava, Built Environment Lead, Somers Town Community Association

  • Slaney Devlin, Chair of Somers Town Neighbourhood Forum

  • Edward Marchand, Associate Director, Bennetts Associates

  • Jane Wong, Co-Director of Architecture and Historic Urban Environments MA, University College London
