Each year, MIT Technology Review selects 35 individuals from around the globe who are leading advancements in research and entrepreneurship. This year's innovators are making significant strides in improving health, fostering a more stable climate, and promoting greater equality. We invite Amy Nordrum, the Executive Editor of Operations at MIT Technology Review, to discuss the prestigious "35 Innovators Under 35" list. In our conversation with Amy, we delve into the selection process for these innovators, the impact they are making, and what MIT Technology Review is most excited about at this moment. Additionally, we welcome two of the innovators to share their journeys and missions.

Feature Speakers:

1. Ang Cui is an Assistant Professor at Harvard University, where she directs the Systems Immunology Laboratory at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Her computational-experimental hybrid research group uses big data to decipher complex immune responses, with the goal of developing more effective immunotherapies for cancer and immune-mediated diseases. She received her Ph.D. in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Prior to that, she received her Master's degree in Bioinformatics from Yale University and Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto. She recently developed the Immune Dictionary, a very large-scale effort that mapped the complexity of immune responses with unprecedented scale and resolution, which has already driven a range of discoveries in biomedical science.

2. Claudia Cea, is currently a postdoc at MIT and soon to be appointed as an Assistant professor at Yale University. She completed her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in 2023 under the guidance of Prof. Dion Khodagholy. A leader in bioelectronics and neural engineering, she was recently nominated for MIT Technology Review's 35 Under 35 Innovator List. Cea's groundbreaking work addresses critical challenges in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which often degrade or are rejected by the body. She developed the first flexible neural recording device utilizing an ion-gated organic electrochemical transistor, which leverages the movement of ions instead of electrical signals for faster, real-time brain signal recording. By integrating ion reservoirs directly into the transistor, Cea minimized the distance ions need to travel, enhancing performance. She also designed the system's data processing, transmission, and power modules using ion-embedded polymers, allowing for wireless communication from within the skull to external terminals. This innovation enables more effective and less invasive neural interfacing.

Co-moderator: Amy Nordrum is an executive editor at MIT Technology Review based in Boston, MA. She oversees the publication’s annual lists of 10 Breakthrough Technologies, Innovators Under 35, and 15 Climate Tech Companies to Watch. Amy recently completed her MBA at New York University's Stern School of Business. She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University and a master's degree from the Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at New York University.

Host: Rhie Lim, is a former CNBC reporter turned entrepreneur and tech investor. As a co-founder of LifeCanvas Technologies, Inc, a company transforming the field of 3D bioimaging, Rhie built the startup from the ground up into a profitable venture. She led a cross-functional team spanning Science, AI/ML, Software Development, Finance, Sales, Marketing, and HR, and raised over $17M from institutional investors and the NIH. Rhie also brought MIT’s first global entrepreneurship bootcamp to Seoul, South Korea, which culminated in a network of 1,200 alumni and the creation of 100+ ventures that collectively raised over $70M. Prior to this, she was a financial news reporter for CNBC Asia, covering South Korean blue-chip stocks such as Samsung, and securing exclusive interviews with numerous opinion leaders, including Warren Buffett. Rhie is passionate about filling market gaps and helping entrepreneurs build products and solutions that have a lasting impact. She holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.
