Tyler Rai & Chloe Alexandra Thompson's Performance

WAKE is a spatialized sound piece composed of seismic recordings from Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica. The piece weaves together the sonic records of calving events over the last decade and condenses geologic time in ways that seek to make the remoteness of Thwaites tangible and immediate. The work invites the bodies of listeners into the vibratory field and voice of a glacier under stress.

Through harmony and dissonance, collision and rupture, we listen to a creation story that is in-the-making/unmaking through the melting of ice; acknowledging the profound entanglements between ice, vibration, story, and sound.

Artist: Tyler Rai, Chloe Alexandra Thompson

Tyler Rai is a transdisciplinary artist, ritualist, and producer who works across live performance, narrative essays, and experimental sound works. She draws connections between grief and mourning practices, biological and cultural inheritances, geologic time, and ecological change to reveal the poetic entanglements between spirituality, mythology, embodied experience, and earth's ecological systems.

Her performance work has been presented by Cannonball Festival, Works on Water, ARC Pasadena, Judson Church, SPACE Gallery, and The School for Contemporary Dance & Thought.

Rai is part of the collective Glacial Hauntologies, an intra-disciplinary collaboration between glaciologists and environmental artists that practice collaborative research methods in relationship to glacial change. More at https://glacialhauntologies.com.
