Session Overview: It’s undeniable that to reach Net Zero, we’ll need to remove billions of tonnes of CO₂. To scale from the low-millions of today we’ll need to explore all viable CDR approaches, leveraging every opportunity from forests and farms to rivers and oceans and our built environment too. Open-system carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions are typically more scalable and can offer numerous additional benefits, yet because there is no neat, enclosing boundary often present fiendish monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) challenges and the risk of unintended consequences. Conversely, closed-system methods are more straightforward in this respect but tend to require more resources and offer fewer co-benefits. In this Ripple, we plan to discuss the unique risk-reward profiles that come with different solutions and if it is possible, or even desirable, to balance a mixed portfolio of solutions that can weather both the technical and market challenges of achieving the scale we need.

Key Questions:

  • How do we balance the trade-off between the ease of MRV, potential co-benefits, and relative risks in open versus closed-system CDR solutions?

  • Given the potential conflict of interests, should scientists or startups be proving open-system solutions?

  • Are untried open systems worth the risk for startups and early-stage investors?

  • Will closed systems ever deliver enough CDR?

  • Is a portfolio approach the right one for investors?

  • How should we be thinking about pricing MRV risks, and what perspectives are carbon markets, insurers, and buyers adopting?

  • What business models and strategies are companies and investors employing to mitigate risks associated with carbon markets?

Who should attend? Innovating or investing in carbon removal, or simply sceptical about carbon markets? This Ripple is for anyone interested in discussing best-in-class carbon removal solutions.
