About Event

BLCK VC and Mastercard are teaming up during NYC FinTech week for a morning of connections, insight and networking over some light bites! Join us at the Mastercard Office on Thursday, April 27th at 8am ET for a special VC breakfast and mixer, followed by a panel discussion featuring Black VC leaders from across the industry who are breaking barriers and changing the game. Panelists:

Abdul Abdirahman is an early-stage investor at F-Prime Capital, where he focuses on FinTech and vertical SaaS investments. Abdul is the co-author of the State of Fintech Report and co-creator of the F-Prime Fintech Index. Prior to joining F-Prime, Abdul invested in emerging markets-based technology startups and worked with a venture-backed digital banking/payments startup in East Africa. Abdul holds joint MBA & MPA/ID degrees from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Abir Liben is a Principal at Primary, where she focuses on fintech. Prior to joining Primary, Abir was a founding member of Serena Ventures where she invested in industry disruptors including Esusu. As an investor, Abir’s lens is informed by an unconventional professional and personal background. Her path to venture includes a childhood in Sweden, Ethiopia and Texas. Abir has experience working across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas as an urban planner, consultant and investor. 

Jillian Williams is a Partner at Cowboy Ventures focused on investing in Seed stage founders with a specialized focus on fintech and vertical SaaS. Prior to joining Cowboy, Jillian was an investor at Anthemis, an early-stage fintech focused venture firm, focused across North America and Europe. She also serves as the head of BLCK VC NYC, the NY arm of BLCK VC. She received her BA from Yale. 

Moderator: 

Sabrina Tharani is the Vice President of Global Partnerships for Mastercard Start Path, the company’s award-winning global startup engagement program. Start Path works with select later-stage startups and helps them to scale, leveraging a combination of Mastercard’s technology, expertise and channels. The startups in the program cover a diverse set of areas including payments, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, wearables, logistics and financial inclusion. Prior to joining the Start Path team, Sabrina worked in Mastercard’s digital payments organization, where she helped build and commercialize several new payment technologies such as Mastercard’s tokenization platform and Mastercard Send. Sabrina received a B.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Cornell University with concentrations in technology and entrepreneurship.
