About the Alameda County Small Developer Incubator
It’s pretty clear to most folks in California that housing is a problem. What’s not always as clear is how we go about addressing that challenge. While there’s no silver bullet, one approach that has multiple benefits is building small-scale residential projects (like townhouses, ADUs, and duplexes) within existing communities. These types of homes allow more families to afford to live in the neighborhoods they want to, that offer existing services and are more climate resilient.
When these types of homes are built by local, small, independent developers, they’re also more likely to build the types of housing their community actually needs, employ local workers and invest wealth back into their neighborhoods. The Alameda County Small Developer Incubator program engages small, independent developers or those interested in becoming developers, and government officials working in Alameda County communities in two initial trainings. We hope to spark collaboration between people that can develop the industry and skilled workforce needed to accelerate and ease the construction of decarbonized, small-scale infill projects.
We hope to foster the important relationship between developers and the city and county staff who are responsible for the permitting of development projects, to help build understanding and work towards mutual goals. The program is designed to help emerging and start-up small-scale developers—or anyone interested in exploring a path into this field—by providing the tools and resources necessary to carry out development projects. Simultaneously, it supports local government staff to better understand realities on the ground.
Anyone interested in contributing to a thriving local development ecosystem—whether as a developer, banker, appraiser, broker, builder, or other industry stakeholder—is encouraged to attend this session.
