Mumbai’s biodiversity is often hidden beneath its towering skyline—but nestled in the heart of Malabar Hill lies a thriving pocket of biodiversity: The Nest. This 1.2-acre urban forest has been revived by nature:re, a project undertaken by the RPG Foundation, as part of a larger Green Corridor initiative to restore Mumbai’s rapidly vanishing green cover.
Unlike the city’s manicured gardens, The Nest is a living, breathing prototype of a forest-like ecosystem—home to over 350 plant species, nearly 200 of them native, alongside a thriving array of fauna and fungi. It serves as a vital reminder of what is possible when urban spaces are returned to nature.
Join Shruthi Sawulla, a biodiversity expert at nature:re, for a rich, immersive tour that explores how Mumbai’s natural capital plays a critical role in addressing climate change. Expect:
A guided tour to discover The Nest’s journey—its past, present, and role in shaping a continuous green corridor across the city;
An urban ecology primer to learn about restoring biodiversity in urban spaces, revitalizing marine ecosystems, and practicing regenerative agriculture in the city; and
a deep dive on microclimates and understanding how urban biodiversity is key to lowering Mumbai's increasing average temperatures!
This will be topped off by a collaborative engagement on tangible ideas for furthering the vision of Mumbai's green corridor.
