The term "starving artist" gets tossed around as a joke, but for many of us, it’s a nagging thought we can’t quite shake. What begins as a passion for drawing slowly evolves into the realization: "Wait… I could actually do this for a living."
But then comes the big, daunting question: how? Should I become an illustrator, a comic artist, or a concept artist? What even sets these roles apart? At first glance, they might seem similar; after all, they all involve creating art professionally. But each path has its own demands, workflows, and opportunities. So, how do you know which one fits you?

Meet the speakers
Kingston Chan
Kingston Chan brings over 14 years of leadership in game art education as former Senior Art Director at FZD School of Design, where he now serves as Head of the Art Department at MAGES. His extensive industry experience includes key roles as a Game Artist at SEGA Japan and Koei Singapore, plus establishing next-gen 3D pipelines as Art Lead at Ksatria Gameworks. Recognised for mentoring the next generation of artists, Kingston has helped countless students launch successful careers in games, film, and entertainment.
Damien Soh
Damien Soh is a visual artist based in Singapore, specialising in digital illustration. His versatile skill set also extends to freelance work for multinational corporations like Unilever, encompassing roles in visual development and art direction. Having worked as the lead illustrator for the short animation “Pagoda of Peril” for Universal Studios Singapore in 2018, Damien recently made his solo exhibition debut with "The Banquet" at Art Outreach Singapore, hosted at Gilman Barracks.
