Webinar: Scaling localism, a new approach to participatory philanthropy
Imagine a world where:
Informal local community groups had the tools to make their own fund allocation decisions in an easy to use, democratic, transparent and continuous way
These groups are empowered / incentivised to work together to solve problems for their communities and the planet.
Funders are able to “stream” money to thousands of these groups (and turn the funding tap up or down based on real-time impact feedback)
At scale, a powerful decentralised network of grassroots changemakers emerges that has the potential to challenge the existing centralised, top down power structures.
The Wellbeing Protocol, a not-for-profit, began as a New Zealand Government-funded project to explore how "Web 3" inspired governance patterns and localism could transform the community grant funding system. After successful trials in New Zealand and the UK, a TVNZ documentary, international coverage and being accepted into the SOCAP24 Fellowship program, we are keen to share our learnings with the broader community that values localism and community empowerment.
This will be of interest to:
Funders (e.g. philanthropists, foundations, central / local government)
Organisations looking to increase community participation engagement power (e.g. participatory grantmaking, participatory budgeting and participatory democracy / governance)
Community groups keen to explore new ways to make decisions and address the “tyranny of the majority” problem.
This free, one hour webinar will include:
Project foundational principles / values / vision
The research that has influenced the project (including Philanthropy 4.0, Ostrom's principles of the commons, Distributed Cooperative Organisations, Reinventing Organisations, Liquid Democracy, The Eight forms of Capital, Conviction voting and Decentralised Autonomous Organisations)
