Enlightenment Evening: The Importance of Realist Business Ethics
Join us on Thursday, 15th May to discuss the ethics of and within business with Dr. Elaine Sternberg.
It's common for politicians and campaigners to advocate for 'business ethics' and 'corporate responsibility', to motivate businesses to exhibit socially desired activities. But how does the compulsion of social responsibility warp the incentives of business, and could it be doing more harm than good?
Dr. Elaine Sternberg is the Philosophy and Corporate Governance Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs, and a Visiting Research Scholar in Philosophy at the University of Miami. She gained her PhD from the London School of Economics, where she was Michael Oakeshott's last doctoral student. Her publications at the intersection of Aristotelian philosophy, libertarian politics and free market economics include 'Just Business: Business Ethics in Action', ‘Defining Capitalism’, and ‘The Power and Pervasiveness of Spontaneous Order’.
Doors open at 6pm for a sharp 6.30pm start. There will be a 15-minute address by Dr Sternberg followed by 10–15 minutes of audience Q&A.
