From Extraction to End-of-Life: A Hands-On Sustainable Product Design Workshop
Design choices shape everything — from how much energy a product uses, to who benefits from it (and who doesn't), to where it ends up after its last use. But many social and environmental impacts of products are invisible at first glance.
In this hands-on session, we’ll work together to map the full journey of a product, from raw materials to end-of-life, and surface the moments where our design decisions matter most. You’ll walk away with a clear view of the ripple effects your work as a product developer can have — and ideas for how to reduce environmental harm and unlock new value for your business and your customers.
What we’ll do:
Collaboratively map an existing product’s value chain — from sourcing to end of life
Identify points where key impacts emerge
Explore how design decisions can influence those points
Share and compare ideas across teams and disciplines
This session will help you:
✅ See the broader system your product lives in
✅ Build alignment with teammates across roles
✅ Make choices that support both people and planet
✅ Kick-start sustainability efforts without needing to be an expert
Who it’s for:
Designers, engineers, product managers, and creatives working on physical or digital products who want to bring a systems lens to their work.
What to bring:
Curiosity, a collaborative mindset, and a willingness to learn!
