About Event

We are looking forward to gathering in our oak forest in Laurel Canyon this Sunday! Did you know that fall, not spring, is the ideal time to plant a California native garden? Bring in photos of your yards (digital ones on your phones is fine!) and get specific advice about what plants to try.

If you are a seasoned native gardener, we need you to share your ideas and experiences.

Some strategies to get started :

  1. Just replace! As you remove your conventional shrubs and trees, put into their place California natives that will not only look great but that will benefit the ecology and create habitat for local wildlife.

  2. Convert a tiny corner, sunny or shady! Plant a native perennial or two and you’ll see how they thrive and fill that area with lushness and wildlife activity.

  3. Park a container of native plants in your garden or on your terrace - many California natives do well in containers!

  4. DIY your native garden conversion over time! Learn as you plant and observe, let your personal wildlife paradise evolve at your own pace.

  5. Go all out — hire a landscape designer/contractor to build for you that dream garden!

Our workshop can help you with any of these approaches. We’ve invited experienced California native gardeners of Laurel Canyon to share their expertise.

Come and explore! We guarantee you’ll leave inspired — whether you are contributing your expertise to the group or whether you are seeking advice with your very first California native plants.

At the end of the session, we will have pieced together a practical list of resources on gardening with native plants in our dry Southern California climate — informational websites, articles, books, videos, nurseries, demonstration gardens, designers, consultants, contractors, environmental organizations, and more

Plus, don’t miss perusing our table of reference books and journals for even more inspiration….

See you Sunday - September 15th!
