Kartika Purnima is a festival celebrated for its religious, cultural, and historical significance, especially in Odisha.

1. Spiritual Significance

Kartika Purnima, falling on the full moon of the sacred month of Kartika, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

• It marks Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

• Devotees take holy dips in rivers and worship Tulsi (sacred basil), seeking spiritual cleansing and liberation (moksha).

2. Cultural Significance in Odisha 🌊

In Odisha, Kartika Purnima is celebrated with the Boita Bandana tradition, honoring the state’s rich maritime legacy.

• Ancient traders (Sadhabas) once set sail on this day for trade with Bali, Java, and Sumatra.

• People float small boats made of banana bark or paper, adorned with lamps and flowers, to commemorate these voyages and Odisha’s glorious history.

3. Dev Deepawali

In many parts of India, Kartika Purnima is celebrated as Dev Deepawali, the “Festival of Lights of the Gods.” It is believed that gods descend to Earth on this day. Temples and ghats are lit with thousands of lamps, creating a mesmerizing sight.

This festival beautifully combines devotion, culture, and pride, making it a day of spiritual and cultural significance.
