Florida Arbor Day @ ICTB Kampong!
Hello friends,
This Friday, January 17th, in light of Florida Arbor Day we have the opportunity to participate in a ceremonial planting of two singular species at the International Center for Tropical Botany at the Kampong. These plants were graciously raised and donated to us by Brett Jestrow and Chad Husby from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.
Plumeria magna, a striking member of the frangipani genus that is only known from the Dominican Republic in Hispaniola, celebrated for its fragrant white and yellow flowers. It is one of the tallest species of Plumeria, reaching over 90 feet in its native habitat.
Cordia salviifolia, commonly known as Sageleaf Cordia, a resilient small tree known only from Hispaniola. Appreciated for its nail file-like leaves and delicate orange flowers, this plant thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, making it a perfect addition to xeriscapes and native plant gardens. Its ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies further highlights their ecological importance, providing both beauty and biodiversity to any landscape.
The plantings will be following the Spring semester's first "Plant Talk at ICTB". You are invited to attend either/both and share the invitation with your committees, students, organizations, etc. We realize these details come with little notice during the busy start of the semester and you may not be able to attend. No worries, we are also working on the details for a National Arbor Day planting to take place in April at MMC.
