Changes to Figtuts

Hey everyone!

It’s been a few weeks since I last hosted a Figtut Friday.

Here’s the lowdown. Figtut prep and all that was starting to eat too much of my time, and I didn’t want to half-ass it. I tried a less time intensive unstructured session, but the thought of doing that every week just seemed boring. I wanted that time to have impact, but in a way that I could maintain.

So.

The community at Figtuts.com is gone. I launched it right before Figma launched a few of their own features, and while a personal space is nice and all, it’s not the place that conversations were happening. Could it have been? Yes, but that’s a whole separate engagement strategy which would have taken a concerted effort. Again, more time.

Instead of community happening on Figtuts, I’ve created a #figtuts channel in the Friends of Figma slack community. Lots of people are in there already, and if you have questions or issues about all things Figma, there’s not a better place to have them. If you are interested in Figma and not in that group, be sure to join. If you go to www.figtuts.com now, it’ll redirect to that channel. Might change in the future, who knows.

Now.

For Figtut Fridays.

I’m going to mix things up a bit and lean into some of the topics that seemed to resonate most with people who have attended. Specifically, I’m going to focus on sessions that help you be a product designer, not just sessions that help you make visual design in Figma.

There’s not enough room in an email for my thoughts on this, so instead I wrote a Medium post about it: https://tomjohndesign.medium.com/design-prompts-arent-helping-you-f22e28e8a21c

First one of these sessions will be on the 14th, since there’s not enough notice for this week. I’ll be sending out an invite for that separately.

TLDR;

Community has moved to friends of Figma slack, I soapboxed about design prompts on Medium and then made a new design prompter, which will be the basis for Figtut Fridays for a while.

See you soon!

Tom
