Create a Worldly Wardrobe

Welcome Oasis

Now you’re probably thinking what’s a “Worldly wardrobe?”. If I’m quite honest with you I just made it up, however let me tell you what I envision it to be.

What do I mean by Worldly?

Worldly as in experienced and sophisticated, I believe we can be this in life, as well as with fashion. My dream is for my wardrobe to emulate this. That means making ethically conscious decisions when building a wardrobe. Thinking not only about the fabrics but the workers involved in the creation process, the supply chain standards and the longevity of our purchases.

Here is five key points I’ve collated to get you on your way to a wee worldly wardrobe of your own:

1. Less is more

Do you know how much easier it’s going to be to pick an outfit for a night out whenyou’re not overwhelmed with options? Having a go to staple like a statement jacket allows you to create a compact collection of outfits that can go well together and save you the classic “I have nothing to wear” meltdown.

This leads on nicely to my next point…

2. Don’t wear outfits once

This is one of the worst impacts that social media platforms such as Instagram have had on our planet. The growing pressure not to “outfit repeat” because of the so called cringe it creates on your insta feed is truly saddening. Not only it highly unsustainable, its also not financially stable. Especially because the people most effected by this concept are teenagers in high school.

3. Second Hand Fashion is your one way ticket to being unique

We all had that friend growing up that hated being copied or maybe that was you. One of the coolest things about shopping second hand on amazing sites like Depop* or at your local charity shop isthat your wardrobe isn’t going to be like any other. Embrace the beauty of not having a clone wardrobe like half your generation. Be you! This is my pride and joy vintage Armani blazer I got for £30 on Depop.

4. Prevent consumer anxiety by consciously buying less

I truly believe consumer anxiety is very present in todays society. We get into a buying frenzyand belief that we will find fulfilment from buying more stuff. At the end of the day that’s all itis, stuff. It rarely makes us happy for more than a day then we are onto the next outfit or item we want. To summarise buy less. If you struggle don’t expose yourself to it.

5. Finally if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!

I can’t stress how important this is. The fashion industry contributes horrifically to modern slavery. If the price is extremely low someone is benefiting at the sacrifice of another. I appreciate budget has a huge role to play in where we all shop but I’ll draw your attention back to my first point less is more.

If in doubt remember the classic reduce, reuse, recycle.

A ‘Worldly Wardrobe’ isn’t easy but its definitely admirable.

Buy less and look after your clothes. That means caring for them, mending them and wearing them multiple times with pride. When it’s finally time to part, please don’t bin them, offer your items to friends, local charity shops or at the very least a rag bag in your local community.

Stay sustainable,
