For some time now, there has been a growing outcry from Filipino Jeepney drivers and operators against the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicles Modernization Program (PUVMP) in the Philippines.
Despite protests, the government is pushing for the forced consolidation of Jeepneys and has set a new deadline of April 30, 2024. This move essentially pressures Jeepney workers into surrendering their franchise rights, disproportionately affecting those unable to afford the steep costs of modernization, thus jeopardizing their livelihoods. Many Filipinos are worried about the program's consequences:
Rising costs, falling income: Modernizing a vehicle costs over 2 million PHP, a price tag many Jeepney drivers and operators cannot afford. This could lead to job losses, impacting many Filipino families financially.
Fare hikes: Fares could triple, making everyday commutes unaffordable for many Filipinos.
Impact on ancillary livelihoods: Other livelihoods like vulcanizing and Karinderya vendors will also be affected. Additionally, there will be a severe transportation crisis affecting all Filipinos.
