Poetic Translations with Nicholas Y. H. Wong
Nicholas Y. H. Wong recently translated Daughters (Balestier Press, 2025) by the Taiwan poet Ling Yu (b. 1952), winner of the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature in 2025. He teaches Chinese-English translation and writes on extractive capitalism and Southeast Asian Chinese writing. As Zhou Sivan, he has published three poetry chapbooks, Zero Copula (Delete Press, 2015), Sea Hypocrisy (co-published by DoubleCross Press and Projective Industries, 2016), and The Geometry of Trees (Sputnik & Fizzle, 2022).
Nic will read from Daughters and discuss his English translation of Ling Yu’s classical and colloquial poetics in relation to Hiroshige’s floating-world (ukiyo-e) prints and postwar French philosophy and poetry.
