Hack Day: Tools for Science
Organised by Flywheel and the Johnian Entrepreneur Club. Join us for a fun day building simple software tools for science in the beautiful St John's College.
Want to build a simpler version of Matplotlib? A tool for saving/loading hyperparameters from YAML files? A web interface for browsing your analysis results? An AI to extract semantic data from research papers stored in Zotero? We can show you how to get started and find collaborators to help.
We have some initiatives here for inspiration, although you can build whatever you like at the Hack.
What to expect:
You will create and release a simple tool/package during the course of the day.
Collaborate broadly, with scientists, software developers, and designers.
Learn how to use LLM-driven tools (e.g. aider.chat, cursor.com) to write code faster.
Learn how to publish and share your tool online (e.g. a pretty Github page).
Learn from experienced mentors.
Improve the "supporting code" for your own scientific projects.
We welcome people from all backgrounds: from scientists who do computational work, to open source tool-builders, and beginners who want to work on their first coding project.
We provide:
An inspiring location in St John's College.
Fuel in the form of coffee and pizza.
WiFi and power.
Date: Sunday October 27th
