Talk 1: Serverless Architecture: Benefits, Trade-Offs, and When to Use It by Sheshank Kodam from Ibotta

Description: If you're curious about the benefits and trade-offs of going serverless, this talk is for you.

Sheshank Kodam will share two years of hands-on experience building serverless applications on AWS. He’ll walk through how to build fast, scalable services that handle over 10 million requests, how to secure serverless applications, and how to design them for flexibility—enabling rapid feature development and multi-tenancy.

Every architectural decision comes with trade-offs, and serverless is no exception. We’ll explore common challenges and discuss practical strategies to overcome them.

The talk will wrap up with guidance on when serverless architecture makes sense—and when it might not.

Bio: Sheshank Kodam is a Staff Engineer at Ibotta with over 13 years of experience in software development. Holds a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University (2011) and previously worked at Chrysler and Dish Networks as a software engineer. He specializes in scalable web applications, API design, DevOps automation, and mentoring junior engineers, with technical expertise in TypeScript, Python, Apache Spark, and AWS cloud infrastructure, and holds 7 patents in various domains.

Outside work, he spends time with family, play sports - recently addicted to pickleball, and hiking--he has done 7 14ers.
